What is the difference btx a Cranwell's and Ornate?

sw0rdf15h Nov 30, 2005 03:57 PM

I can't tell what kind my Pacman is. He's not albino. = I also don't own a digital camera, or I would post pics. Are there distinguishing characteristics, or are these basically the same?

It's pretty easy to tell the difference between an ornate and cranwells.
Ornate's are usually a more vibrant green with blood red speckling all over the head and body. They also have bright yellow on their sides. The pattern of dark red/brown spots almost completly covers their backs. And the easiest way I've noticed to identify an Ornate, if your unsure, is to look at the spots on the head. There should be a spot on the back of each eye and two in the middle of the head. I've never seen an ornate without them, and a crawell's doesn't have them.
Although a cranwelli can come in various shades of olive green to brick reds and browns.

Those are some AWESOME specimens, are they yours?

I am sure I have a Cranwell, thanks for the help. Are there differences in temperments/behaviors/care at what so ever or is this just a coloration thing? My guy is an awesome color of gree, only black markings but with brown over the eyes.

yeah those one's are mine.
The care for an ornate and crawells is the same. In my opinion temperment pretty much the same, and varies from frog to frog.
Like my albino cranwell's who'd willingly take your finger for lunch, while the ornate just hops franticly away when it see's a hand.
The surinam horn frog (C.cornuta) as far as I know only requires slightly higher temp's between 80-90 degrees only droping as low as 75 at night. They also tend to be more secretive than other horn frogs, and enjoy alot of plant cover to feel comfortable. Because most of these frogs are wild caught they tend to be problem feeders and have to be force fed. But captive bred frogs feed readily on the same things you can offer a crawelli or ornate.
