Orange Ghost and Butterscotch Ghost Breeding Compatability

pj_farmer Nov 30, 2005 07:28 PM

I just got a hell of a deal on an Adult Male Orange Ghost and just had to pick him up. Since he is ready to breed I'd like to get as much out of this deal as I can.

I currently have a Het Butterscotch Ghost female that produced for me last year and I wanted to know if it was possible to breed them together and still get ghosts. I am not too familiar with the different types of ghosts and wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time.

If I do breed them, will I still get ghosts, and if so what will they look like/be?

Hope everyone's breeding season is going well.......

Thanks!!

Thos some say they are not Orange and Butterscotch are actually the same. So far all Hypo lines have proved compatible.

Tosha,

I do believe Graziani has a line of hypo that is not compatible with the others out there. I am not sure if the Citrus Ghosts of Gulf Coast Reptiles are compatible with the others... maybe someone can shed some light on those.

You are right - I'd forgotten about the Grazi line. I stand corrected.

But did his new lines even prove? I remember him having a bunch of imported ghost looking animals a few years back but I wonder if there aren't some imported "ghosts" that turn out not to be genetic.

I'm currently working with Gulf Coast's line of citrus ghost and in my opinion they are totally different from other lines out there. Granted nobody has tried to cross them with the other established lines (including GC) but I do not think they will prove to be the same thing. Both the orange and butterscotch have very similar looks to them. They start out as stunning hatchlings but in a year most are just faded snakes. The citrus starts out as a very good looking animal with barely any fading at all, as they reach the 200 gm mark the fading begins to show along with the bright yellow's and oranges. By 400-600 gm's the animals are truly stunning with almost no black on them at all. As adults they are the most colorful hypo's on the block. I was over at GCR's last week and we talked at length about this. Only time will tell but hopefully they will not prove to be compatible as there is already enough mixing of the ghost lines out there. I've included 3 pics, one is my male citrus ghost the day i brought him home from daytona, the second is an adult that belongs to gulf coast reptiles and the third is my boy at 250 gm. I'm going to get some new pics of my boy this week as he's over 450 gm now and starting to look awesome. Josh Hutto.....JKReptiles.

thank you very much for the kind words. He is truly a stunning animal. I took some new pics of him today and should have them resized by tomorrow. The change these guys go through each shed is amazing. If you do not have citrus ghost blood in your collection, get it as soon as you can. As soon as the first cross with them is made, they will be worth their weight in gold, especially the females. Here is an old pic of my cit. ghost with his future pastel mate. these pics have terrible lighting and the pastel is really a good looking girl, lol.

I'm not so sure of that, ask Kevin over at NERD he knows more about the Ghost variations than any of us... If I'm not mistake there is other lines out there that are NOT compatable with each other... I'd check with Kevin before I'd assume anything here!!! Anthony McCain-McCain's Reptiles...

bpconnection Dec 01, 2005 03:46 PM

I don't believe that is correct...I haven't worked w/ hypos, but looked into them and spoke with Oz. He said there are a few different lines that have proven to be incompatable.

When I went shopping around for mates for my ghost and het ghost I was pretty much told by a couple of big breeders that most hypo lines are compatible - I think it may have been Kevin that told me that as far as he knew his line was compatible with all of the established lines (my het is NERD green ghost). Although I do recall now that there was some chatter about Graziani having one that may not have been compatible other lines and maybe the Southerlands too. The irony is everyone was more than happy to outright say - yeah my line is compatible with NERDs when I was looking to buy - LOL. Should be a place where such compatibilities can be posted.

Hey,

Between hunting, VT Football, and working on the new Snake Room I haven't had time to work on the website at all. Every time I go to take pictures of what I have for sale it is to darn dark outside for pictures, and I just never have been able to get indoor pictures to work.

Email coming your way......
