Herping for boas in S. Florida...

ghireptiles Nov 30, 2005 09:03 PM

Not like it's really difficult to find snakes here but boas are not that common LOL! A friend was raking leaves in his yard two days ago and he found this gal under some of them so he gave her to me...

Only great snake I've found doing yard work was a good sized rat snake.

Just kidding. I spent a big part of my childhood in florida, pasco county area. Thats how I got into herping in the first place. Anyways we would always find green Iguanas and my friends mom even found a big ol burm once. I loved growing up there if I ever have kids Ill probaly raise them in florida. I know exotics thrive out there. God only knows what could be running around out there. Best of luck with her. Rich

Do you think she was released into the wild? She looks pretty young to be a burden on someone. I hope a wild popultaion does not flourish and destroy the diminishing ecosystem down there. Its a shame.

Burms...retics....balls....boas...anacondas...you name it, it's starting to cause a problem. It's a shame really, but a lot of people...including a lot of breeders down that way...are just releasing unwanted animals into the everglades. It's always happened, but lately it's gotten out of control and finding/removing them has become a full time thing. FL is trying to get legislation through that will make it hard to own any species of Boa or Python...regardless of it's size, threat, or ability to survive in the wild. It really sux, but look to have to go through the same things for you snakes as you would a venomous if you live down here.
