Time for a new cage

mattj Jul 23, 2003 11:43 AM

I got lucky, sort of. My Igs are due for a cage upgrade. My basement flooded and I got a decent insurance check to fix it up. So I'm doin' it up and providing a real built in show stopper for my two Igs. I'm going to screen off a section of the room directly opposite the stairs along the entire opposing 30' wall, like 5 or 6 feet out from the wall. I'll fill it with loads of toys and (safe!) live plants and such - and several microclimate options. I'm also going to build my 150 gallon Oscar tank right into the front/center of the cage. I'm so excited to get started!

Well I did some more measuring and a deep enough cage will crowd the space too much on that wall. I'm going to put it on another wall. It'll still by 8h x 6d x 12long tho. And, I'll be building my smaller 75g tank into the back wall.

I have a room with a 150g and 75g, as well. are you setting them into the wall? whats going to go in the 75g? and also what kind of filters do you use (going to i guess) for the oscars? my 150g has 6 painted turtles and my 75g has 6 goldfish

The 75g is about to go in the wall any day now. I'm about 75% convinced to build the 150g into a bar. I had the Oscars in my 150 and may put them in the in wall 75g. Not exactly sure what will happen w/ the 150. Fresh water would be the easy way to go so I could put both tanks on a common sump type filter. I may be tempted to do a very simple fish only salt water setup in the 150 tho.

awesome, id love to have tanks set into the walls. i wonder how theyd be cleaned, though?

you say oscars, im hoping no more then 2...a 150g is pretty much minimum for 2 adult oscars and a 75g would house 1. maybe you need <G> more tanks ;D do you/what kind of other fish& tanks do you have?

I've got a 39g setup upstairs as well w/ a few angels and catfish. Cleaning the 75g in wall will be easy because the back will hang out into my unfinished basement. Clean the "in bar" 150g will probably be easier than it was before - closer to the drain/sink for one - LOL! First the entire back of the bar above the tank will be open and the bar top will provide more than enough clearance for lights, arms etc. Plus I'm going to build the bar so it can just lift right off the tank completely for more serious maintenance chores. I'm thinking about building a back lit glass block base for this "aquabar."

about the sink! i need to either buy more tubing to make my python reach my aquarium room, but what ive been doing is attaching a air line tubing to the tanks and stretching it so it can drain out the window. i also can adjust the air line so it wont take out too much water, and then when i notice its done, i use a bucket and add water back in. the other day i accidentally took out too much water, (about 50% on the goldie tank, and they arent used to it, been through a ton of stress this month) and they were looking very iffy but then were better in the morning
