Lightning and herping

Aaron Dec 01, 2005 12:28 AM

I have access to some land in the Davis Mtns. where it will be pretty much all nightwalking. What are your thoughts on the safety issues with nightwalking when there is those perfect conditions of light intermittent rain with lightning around?

I did extensive night walking far away from the road in Black
Gap ten years ago. I got caught in the rain a couple of times.
There were some caves in the sides of the hills that I could
shelter in when it was raining. I would definitely avoid being
out in the open when conditions are prime for lightning.

My conclusion after a large numbers of nights both night walking
and working the cuts is that hunting the cuts is more productive. I have collected three alterna out walking though
and it's really nice to be in undisturbed habitat.

Any thoughts as to why the cuts are more productive. My idea is that it is just a matter of the snakes being more visible, and the amount of ground you can cover is greater. Also, on a lot of the more vertical cuts, a snake could be exposed for long periods of time as it searched around for food.
