What is the value of a jungle?

boamorphs1 Dec 01, 2005 10:26 AM

The reason I bring up this question is because I have noticed a few jungles (not that aberrant either) selling for up to 6k and from what I have observed, many people (including myself) will be producing jungles this season if not next. I know of maybe 6 people in just the bay area that are working with them! So why raise the price so high this last season? Is this an attempt to get as much money as possible before other people start producing? People like Peter Kahl kept his jungles reasonably priced at no more than 3.5k for jungles with a good amount of aberrancies, since he has not advertised any more it seems that people raised their prices and are selling animals with hardly ANY aberrancy for ALMOST double.

Are we supposed to say “okay, no one has any left, let’s raise our prices”? Kind of reminds me of all the people that buy popular toys on Christmas and sell them for double on EBay or the local classifieds.

A few months back I was promised a pair of boas from a big breeder for a specific price, but after there was a high demand for this animal the person decided that he could no longer sell me that animal for that price and added an extra 7k on the price tag. I was a bit disappointed, especially since I invested so much in animals previously purchased from this breeder. Okay, I’m getting off topic…… let’s get back to jungles. I really think that we will be finding jungles for fewer than 2k in the next year or so to be paying 5, 6 or 7k now. I’m sure the people producing now will disagree but let’s take a look at how many people just on these forums have jungles and expect to produce anything within the next year or two? So, who is planning on producing in the next year or 2?

I think for every person that has them there are 20 more that want them. Think of it this way even if you buy one for 10k now and in 2 years breed it and babys sell for only 1k sell 10 of them and you made your money back first year!!! Even better breed it to a hypo or albino female and make even more. Thats not bad considering you will probably spend the money to buy the next latest and greatest morph anyway (I know I will).

I think it would be nice to have an open forum for this subject, like the ball python forum does. I think with all the new people that have been getting into breeding boas, balls, or whatever....this info needs to be discussed.
I think we will always have those who try to beat everyone else out of their priceing...just look at the classifieds, but we should all know or be concerned with the fair market value.
I only produce Salmons...so far, but It would have been alot easier to set priceing if there was a standard for me to look at. I am not so sure I agree with $10,000. animals that I get a $1,000. return on either....a couple years later.

Something I read on the ball forum....babies will move at far less prices, and I understand this. It seems that the yearlings and older have retained a higher priceing and to me it is justified.

I think this would make an excellent discussion for the boa forum...Thanks Kingsnake.

I don't think you can really look at it that simple. First, nobody is guaranteed that their boa is going to produce anything, some people don't produce anything until 4 or 5 years of owning the boa, some may only produce 1 or 2. My point is that I don't see why the price is so high (seems higher this year the last) when it seems that a large of amount of offspring are due around the corner. How many of you remember seeing Motleys for 10k not last but the previous season and now you can surely find one for 6k. I feel sorry for the people that spent 4k more just the previous year. This is the same thing I think will happen with the jungles. I think too many people are working with these to hold a value so high as a boa that is not too available. I see less leopards then jungles and they are still selling for the same price as they were previously.

unless you are really looking to make a full time thing out of it. I personally would love to eventually, but I know that is many many years away for me right now. I am really just trying to accuire all the morphs I love and hopefully at least break even on them. Good luck with your projects, and I dont think you can go wrong with a Jungle even if It does cost you 5k. Vinnie

I dont know if this is a true statement or not....

"People like Peter Kahl kept his jungles reasonably priced at no more than 3.5k for jungles with a good amount of aberrancies, since he has not advertised any more it seems that people raised their prices and are selling animals with hardly ANY aberrancy for ALMOST double."

I was "told" Pete raised his prices to 4-5k now for jungles.

I do know that I see the value of Jungles being steady for awhile now that Super Jungles are being produced and the Jungle bred to Salmons and Albinos will demand great prices and help steady the value of normal Jungles as well.

The amazing differences in Jungles make them very in demand and I think the price reflects that.

boamorphs1 Dec 01, 2005 11:35 AM

Someone that is consistently here purchased one for 2.5k and someone else here also purchased another one from Peter for 3k and this was probably 2 to 4 months ago. I think one was VFR, I don't know who the other was but I seen both posted on the forums.

topnotchboas Dec 01, 2005 04:01 PM

I bought the 2.5k one. Pete admitted to me that he undersold him and told me his future jungles will be sold for double that (5k). I have talked to friends of mine who have purchased jungles at this price from Pete, so the price defenitely has gone up.

I agree with Mark. The wide phenotypic variation and overall appeal keeps the demand high. Why the jungle market suddenly spiked is up for speculation, because the super was produced? because an influx of people wanting to buy sub 5k yet high end boas arose? because they are just so cool? All of the above? Who knows. Like stated above, supply and demand fuels all markets... and many variables can play a role.

And not to mention at only $2,500...a great deal! I love how colorful he is! Good luck with him and hopefully he'll produce more babies for you that look just like him!

Thanks,
Celia

next year!

hognose15 Dec 01, 2005 12:23 PM

Jungles are some of the best looking boas out there. With all of the different morphs, Salmon Jungle, Sunglow Jungle, etc. prices will be untouchable. We'll start seeing, if we havn't already, double and triple het. Jungles and the prices will be up there.

Compared to most everyone in here, I am new to the boa world. I bought my 1st boa 8 years ago and really didn't start getting into the hobby with a passion until about 3-4 years ago. I should have a litter fathered by a Jungle in late spring. He's a horny devil and has been courting her for a week now. Being new to the business, I can't expect to get the prices the known breeders get. At the same time, so not to water down the hobby and give myself a bad reputation, I can't under price them either. I have no idea what I'll be asking when they're here. I'll just have to feel out the market.

He has no major abberencies, but he's a beauty. I want to breed him in a year or so to the Basically Boas Salmon Aby below. If anyone has seen the Aby line, they should make some sweet Salmon Jungles.

ajfreptiles Dec 01, 2005 12:36 PM

That one you posted on the top....is that a Jungle? Thanks Andy

hognose15 Dec 01, 2005 03:37 PM

The top and middle picture are the same boa.

He is a Jungle, but my camera sucks. I can only get some of his color.

ajfreptiles Dec 01, 2005 04:42 PM

Just curious as to where you got him? Thanks Andy

ReBall1 Dec 01, 2005 01:02 PM

Hey hognose15,
this is o/t but I was just wondering what year your hypo abby was? The reason I ask is a buddy of mine may have a litter mate to yours and was tryin to convince me it "IS A SUPER..NOT POSSIABLE BUT IS". A while ago we where haveing a friendly debate on who got the best deal on thier hypo, mine being a possiable and his (so he says) being confirmed super. I looked all over basicly boas site and didnt see any supers for sale. So my question is was yours sold to your as a super? Regardless yours and his look great. Their about the same "grade" as mine thanks Rich

hognose15 Dec 01, 2005 03:32 PM

She is not a Super. She is a year and a half.

I have her normal sister too. She's far from normal though.

I have 9 boas from Basically Boas.
