Texas Rat Snake

tex54 Dec 01, 2005 03:47 PM

Here is a photo of a nice looking Texas Rat I caught in Robertson County, TX last week. It's a good sized one, about 4ft. I was out deer hunting, but it was too hot and windy, so I decided to walk up a dry creek bed and look for herps and saw this one try to get into a crevice in the creek bank. I couple of weeks before, my son and I found a Ribbon Snake and a shed skin near the same spot where I found this guy. I have also seen a green tree frog (I don't know my frogs very well so I can't say exactly what species) and a good number of Red Eared Sliders in the creeks on this property. This snake doesn't seem to be too feisty, considering their reputation, so we may keep it for a while. The three times I have had to handle it since its capture, it has not struck at me once or even vibrated its tail.

Nice find. Do you ever find any Great Plains rats or common kings in Dec-Feb? I'm trying to establish how active these snakes are in winter. Thanks...Terry Cox

The only snake I remember finding in that time frame is a Checkered Garter, but then I also have never found a Plains Rat of King in TX.

I enjoy the aged knowledge here. Apparently age is up to date. LOL.
