introduction... i know this seems silly

raisnok Dec 01, 2005 06:03 PM

as it maybe, i was out today dropping off extra rat breeders to a pet shop, im pretty well known in that shop as when i was raising birds this guy always was happy to buy birds from me, now his son has taken over the business..... and as we were sorting rats, we were also chatting he was asking me about my snake collection... after getting done he told me to hold on for a sec, he came back with a little amel hatchling, whom he told me the snake wouldnt eat, hadnt eaten in weeks.... even refused live prey.... and he asked me if i would be interested in taking the little guy home, i asked "for how much".... he put the snake in a little cloth bag and said take him, here if we cant get them to eat they die off, maybe if you take him he will be ok....the snake was in a small critter keeper with news paper and a water dish, he had no where to move more less nor no where to hide, i asked him about all of that and he explained that was how they were trying to get the snake to eat....
any way i brought the snake home, setup a 10 gallon tank, with all the furnishings, water dish, 2 hides, a heat pad and aspen substrate, put the snake in and left him alone while i checked the other snakes whom have still not eaten..... but about 630 i thawed a pinkie mouse, put it in a deli cup and put the little guy in the cup, the mouse was gone before i could set the cup in the tank..... so right now he is doing pretty good.
ill be posting photos soon of all the snakes

what exactly is a grey rat snake? and how are they as pets?

Hotshot Dec 01, 2005 08:46 PM

a white oak phase from Dwight Good. The grey rat is the Pantherophis obsoletus spiloides and they make just as good a pet as any black rat or corn!!

Jerk Why do I never get lucky like that? Good luck with him! Also, grey rats are located on the east coast and are just that...GREY RATS. I have heard they are mean and picky eaters and I have also heard they are just like most other obsoletus, pretty docile and great eaters. I would think they would be the latter. But am definately no expert!

i got a grey rat. she is tempermental, eats like an ox and is a great pet. she's mean getting her out of the rack( sounds like a rattle snake shaking her tail) but once she's out she's probably the best of my six rat snakes to handle, rest are corns. my daughter who's 4 handles her alot and the snake has no problems even if my daughter moves to fast or anything like that. i'm no expert but in my experience they are great eaters, great pets, but slightly tempermental. they are worth having though. if you get one you won't be disapointed.

Since you've already received your Christmas present...

(in my best "Soup Nazi" accent) NO MORE FOR YOU!

LOL.

...An albino Texas Ratsnake and an albino Florida King came to me the same way. A good friend who breeds a lot of snakes gave them to me as "non-eaters" (actually, the Tx Rat was skin & bones)...They were both destined for the freezer, and he said, "If you can get them to eat, they're yours." I had to work at it a little more than you did, but they are both doing well. Another Tx Rat, a normal-colored one given to me at the same time as the albino, never ate and eventually died.

My leucistic Texas Rat was also given to me by the same friend. He (the ratsnake, not the friend) has bugeyes and was essentially "worthless" to my friend so he gave him to me. I personally don't mind the bug-eye trait at all and the snake has turned into a 4 foot beauty.

2 of my corns came from the same guy. $10 each since they were not eating as well as he liked. One of them has turned into one of my "garbage disposal" snakes, eating any available leftovers.

Gotta love it! Duffy
