Question on my rat snakes

Chonubrid Dec 02, 2005 12:11 PM

I have a black rat snake, about 2 and a half years old, and a texas bairdi rat snake, about one and a half years old. As soon as it got chilly outside, they both stopped eating... been about 2 weeks. Their enclosures are both on t-stats so it hasn't changed in their cage very much... last year neither of them went off feed. Any input?

Possibly they might have noticed the change in daylight hours, which easily could have triggered it.
I had two subocs do that last year.

Yes, very common. I find that they will sometimes go through the winter accepting smaller prey items (usually less often). A snake that was eating small rats every week might accept a rat pinky every two weeks, etc. If they go a month without eating (as a few of mine now have) I usually cool them down for at least a few weeks. This generally cycles them back up & they begin feeding again. Duffy
