The specimen is indeed an Ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata ornata).

Here is another pic of him. Is there a Eastern and Western locality??

Ornates come in two flavors though but they are official subspecies.

Common Ornates inhabit most of the central status and do live in Missouri. The Desert Ornate or Luteola inhabits New Mexico, SE Arizona, West Texas and Northern Mexico.

Here's a good reference link...

Yes like Paul said two flavors. So that would be a ornata ornata.

But Paul locally does affect them some bit just like in easterns. There shell paterns differ also so do head patterns.

I just meant there hasn't been any study or patterns recorded for different localities of Ornates. There has been much observation and discussion regarding patterning in Eastern box depending on locality but again not much information aggregated on the subject.

Sounds like a great study if you ask me unfortunately the funding may be a problem

I think it's fascinating to hear about patternless, black Easterns or 8" Three-toes or green/yellow headed Ornates.

Cheers friend.
Paul
