Patience Grasshopper ...
I use the Johnsons and they do a fine job at maintaining a perfect temp. gradeint in my racks. I love them and really haven't seen the need to buy something more expensive. I have never used the Rancos so I can't really tell you if one is better then the other.

probably because most of us are like tosha where we've only used one or the other... I would just get whichever is more convenient for you, and use it. They both seem like quality thermostats to me, but I've only used the cheapo Alife ones, so I wouldn't know.
I have one of those Alife analogs and a Zoo-med analog too,but they are on their way out of here soon.
I'm also running one of the 1500watt Johnson Controls(It's good)...but i really like the two Herpstats i have the best.
I've never had a Ranco...but my buddys seems to be doing the job just fine.

there is not much difference. We have more Rancos, than Johnsons because I can usually find the Rancos cheaper on Ebay. The only significant difference between the two that I've found is on the temperature differential setting. We set that at one degree on our t-stats. On the Ranco, when the temp drops one degree from your temp setpoint the power comes on. On the Johnson, the temp has to drop two degrees from your temp setpoint before the power comes on. Not a big difference, they both work well.

I have a johnson controlls thermostat and have been very happy with it. Im not sure about the ranco ? The johnson controll has some cool features. Replaceable temp probe, If the probe fails it is replacable. There is a fail mode that you can either shut off or turn full on in the event of a temp probe failure, using it for reptiles make sure it is set to turn off . I have yet to wire in a switch but there is a feature that you can set a seperate temp and differential for a night drop feature . When you close the switch it changes to the second setting. I wired in a surge protector strip and have a plug for each shelf of my rack. Also you can mount this controller up to 600 ft from the probe. Not something we may need but you could actually mount the controller in the house and run the probe out to your garage and be able to see your temps from in the house , and controll it from the house. You can buy these fairly reasonable from micro beer companies. They are capable of controlling a heater,Flex Watt or freezer .
