I caught a "buttermilk" racer just before the first cold snap hit in texas.
He's just about a foot long, kinda small compared to the ones I'm used to catching. He still has his juvenile coloring, the blotchy pattern, and is just getting his first spots. I named him Lobo cause he thinks he's big and bad. He's pretty calm though.
My question is why they're called buttermilk racers.
I was raised calling them Celestial Whipsnakes or Celestial racers.
Sometimes I'd call them star snakes. They look like the night sky.
Anyway, that was my question. I was just handling Lobo when I thought about asking. They're really neat snakes.
