Q about patternless pines...

Br8knitOFF Dec 03, 2005 03:21 PM

Generally speaking, when somebody advertises a 'patternless pine', are they northern, southern, mexican, etc.?

Specifically like the ones in these links:

Thanks in advance!

I am not aware of any Pattermless Mexican Pines but I have seen both Patternless Northerns and Southerns. I posted some of mine down closer to the bottom of this page. My guess about the one you linked us too is a Southern but that is just a guess.

Absolutely beautiful!

Now, is he a northern or a southern?

Heading to the show in Vegas the weekend of 12/10 (next weekend), and curious what I can expect to pay for a yearling if I can find one?

Thanks!

Mine are Southerns, but pricing varies a lot. I guess average would be 100 bucks? Sometimes more, sometimes less.... Tom Stevens

When you start talking about patternless southern's, Tom has some of the best I have seen. His are abosolutely beautiful and as he knows I have a fewof his in the collection. In my opinion they are pure southerns.

On the market however today I have seen "patternless" northerns, bulls and also some sonorans. All of which when I have started looking into heritage/lineage it gets real murky as to where they came from in most cases. Additionally in several cases I was able to trace them back to the admitted intergration of southern blood into several of the predominant lines on the market. To some folks this dows not make a difference after so many years of rebreeding them so that they appear as pure animals as far as scale counts, body conformation etc. I think everyone knows my aversion to these animals though , so I won't comment further.

The patternless southerns you see usually originally came from around Ocala Florida, where it seems there is a wild gene pool that consistently produces this pattern morph naturally. It is so predominant in that area that normal patterned animals many times produce the patternless phase when they are from that area. Really a cool great looking trait. I agree with Tom also that good patternless southerns should go for around 90 - 125.00 give or take a few dollars. Below is a pic of a patternless albino southern one of my favorites.

I've been these guys since the early 90's, this is one of the first females I produced that has since become an "old" reliable breeder.
