Variety

I believe what is missing with the current vein of thinking is variety. I have four outdoor enclosures. I will rotate my Cribos and Spilotes outside on nice days and it is exciting to watch the personality and behavioral change these captives undergo with a day or two outside once a week. It also has the added bonus that the snakes look forward to the handler since you are providing an end to a means. I provide an underground sump by sinking a ten inch diameter PVC pipe 2 feet into the ground. One end of the pipe is caped so water will not come up from underground. The open end is four inches above ground level and a Styrofoam cooler can be placed over the top upside down with an entry hole. Stucco can be added to the cooler for weight. This provides a cool retreat on hot days. I use plastic coated wire and it is simple to cut a hole in the cage and slide it over the pipe. Cooler is then placed inside. Natural UV exposure to the elements makes for a whole different animal. People with fire ants should exercise caution. If we are willing to spend XXXX for a snake we should be willing to spend XXXX for an enclosure.

I've thought of doing the same thing; main thing keeping me from doing it is the fear of escape. Please post a pic when you have your outdoor cage done -

Cages are done. They have been in use for about nine years now. I will send Max some pictures to post. He may already have some pictures........Bill

Can we say cool, even with highs in the hundreds?
You bet!

The stuff that looks like shaving cream on the inside is hardened spray foam so that lizards can get out of the tube. I work with Baja California Blue Rock lizards in addition to snakes.
