Beardie sex change???

beardielover13 Dec 03, 2005 05:12 PM

Today when I took my dragons (1 male, 1 female) out of their cages to try to breed them (experienced) instead of the male trying to bite the female on the back of the neck, the female went for the male's neck. She has went after his tail before, but never his neck. I am 100% sure this dragon was female because from the time she was young, she did not have any lumps near her vent like the male does. So what I'm asking is if the female could now be a male.

a change of sex is very unlikely...possibly was a male from the begining. They may not be ready to breed and are fighting off one another.

females can show aggression as well, during breeding and/or territorial. If you are 100% sure of the sex, they did not change

Bearded dragons do not alter their sex as some amphibians do. Once they are born, their sex is determined throughout their lives. However, females can and will mount other dragons. This is a show of dominance, not mating behaviour.

As adult bearded dragons are very easy to sex, double check the sexes, just to make sure. I am not sure how large your dragon collection is but it is always possible, especially with dragons of nearly the same color and pattern, to be mixed up. If the sexes are correct, reintroduce the pair in a couple days or a week. Or even try a different male. Some females may not like the male you provided.

I only have the two dragons. I am completely sure that the one that tried to mount the other was the female because she has a duller color and the male is yellow. Maybe it was aggression because she is about 1.5" longer than the male.
