Unbreed femal laying eggs

xblackheart Dec 03, 2005 07:22 PM

my female bearded dragon has been laying eggs and she was never introduced to a male. Is this normal? How can I get her to stop? Will breeding her help, and if so, is she fertile without "hybernating"? Is a male fertile without "hybernating"?

I read in this forum that a female can lay eggs without being with a female. That is all I remember of what the person said.

Female bearded dragons can and do lay eggs even without being with or near a male dragon. The eggs in this case are infertile and can be frozen then tossed out. However there isn't any way to stop the dragon from producing eggs outside of having her ovaries removed by a vet (ie spaying her).

However, laying infertile eggs, just like fertile eggs, does take it's toll on the dragon. Make sure she is getting plenty of calcium, maybe even a bit more than normal as she u ses alot of calcium to coat these eggs. Make sure she has access to a good nesting bin so she doesn't wind up retaining the eggs and becoming egg bound (life threatening condition if not taken to a vet in time).

Breeding her won't really make a difference, she will still lay the eggs but this time they will be fertile and you will need to incubate and feed/house the young then find homes. A big task if you are not really prepared to do it.

Brumation isn't required for bearded dragons to be fertile. Many breeders have successfully bred their dragons without the cool down period. However some dragons need this cooling down period to breed, where others don't require it.
