I have been interested in House Snakes for years, although I dont keep them anymore. I've always thought they were good candidates for a popular captive snakes, but there have been a few problems.
They aren't widely available and therefore people don't look for them as starter snakes. Then not much information is available so people are wary of trying them.
Most Housesnakes are rather drab, although some of the best red morph snakes are really nice. But nobody seems to be focusing on breeding the reddest snakes with each other to increase the intensity of the color.
There are albinos, but most of the albino lineages haven't been improved, IMHO. If I had an albino snake, I would breed it into the REDDEST females I could find in an effort to produce the pinkest albinos.
Furthermore, people are still asking ridiculous amounts for albinos. When they don't sell at the ridiculous price, people give up on breeding them. It seems like with such a prolific snake, you could afford to make quite a return by selling your albino babies for $100 or less. But noone has been willing to lower the price to that degree.
