halvyt Dec 03, 2005 07:48 PM

Just wondering what would be the best mannered python or boa in the 8-10' range.

Have you considered Jungle carpet pythons? Or possibly Womas?

Thanks for the input. I was hoping to keep to the classic python look. I like burms but they are a little to big for my taste.

You might consider the light-phase indian from India and Pakistan or the Sri-lankan form from the island. I have some pics posted on the burmese forum of my indians at 3.5 yrs. they are reaching 6 ft. and most indians stay under 10 ft. There are ones that reach 15 ft. but I have found that people that want huge burms and huge indians really feed them alot and try to see how big they will get. I did have a burm that averaged 3 inches growth a month and was 12 ft. in a year approximately, so burms do seem to have the genes for rapid large growth.

The only hitch is finding someone breeding the light-phase or sri-lankans in your state. That way you can buy one legally as opposed to needing the CBW permit for Class A Endangered Species, obtained from the Federal fish and game and takes about 3 months to obtain after the paper work is completed.

Hope this helps.
wel

A carpet or Aussie Olive. Olives get over 10', but are very tame. Carpets are usually prettier, but not as large.

If money is an issue, MacLott's are nice, and normally see 7-8'.

All these pythons mentioned would be good, though the macklotts is DEFINATELY not the most well behaved snake. if you really just want a super-tame pet snake, I'd reccomend a ball python, or if you'd like something bigger, a red-tail boa. These have been preffered pet snakes in the pet trade forever, and for good reason. Many might say theyre too "common" or "boring", but that to me just means nice, tame snake. It comes down to if you want a great pet, or something "unusual"...

you can't get any closer to the classic boa/python look than an old fashioned common boa constrictor.

improvius Dec 05, 2005 10:16 PM

I'd go with a Bredl.

I have always been a fan of the common ball python.... I know it is a little smaller than what you are looking for though. I think it is retarded what some people are paying for some of the morphs.

My '04 Columbian Boa is the tamest snake I've ever seen. You can stroke his head and he won't even flinch. A female should get 8-10'. Also, you might want to consider a Blood Python. Females get about 5', but they can be as heavy as a 10' Burm. Their girth gives them that big snake feel without needing a walk-in cage and jumbo rabbits. As long as you get a CB hatchling and handle it often, it should be tame and docile.
