Boxie curiosity

Califia Dec 04, 2005 09:46 AM

I have an eastern Box turtle that a friend of mine brought to school one day. They said they found her on the road, but she was really tame, so we suspect that she may have been someone's pet.
She's now one of my pets.
I read some posts here about their curiosity and toys, and then I tried the stuffed animals and letting her walk around my room.
She's terribly attracted to my closet!!!
I can't get her to stay from it. I blocked the pathway, and she's now trying to climb over it. Can anyone give me ideas as to WHY she's doing this??
It's really humorous to watch..

I can't answer why your turtle would be so attracted to the closet unless she wants to hide in there.. but my Shell E has a major fascination with shoes.
My DH has a bad habit of leaving shoes all over the place, when Shell E is out & I can't find her, all I have to do is look for shoes on the floor. She's either on them or IN them. LOL

I grew up in New Jersey. We kept Easterns during the summer and always let them go in the fall. One year, I kept one (unknown to my dad) in my bedroom. When it got really cold ( I always kept my window open} he went straight to the closet and hid under my shoes. (drafty old cold house) Your turtle is trying to hibernate!! Give him a better and wetter place to do so!! Believe it or not, that turtle came out of hibernation in the Spring but he was in TERRIBLE CONDITION!! Put your turtle in the basement or garage in a large Rubbermaid tub with at least 8 inches of leaf litter/spagnum moss and soil. Keep it moist!! He will do MUCH BETTER!! Once and Eastern decides to "go under" there is little that you can do to stop him!!
