looking for a young cb ornate uro

asch803 Dec 04, 2005 01:55 PM

I am interested in getting a baby or young ornate uro and was wondering if anyone knows where i might be able to get one? I know a few breeders have them for 300 or 350, but i just don't have that kind of cash - i'm a teacher...just to tell you my deal, I have a full setup, since i just moved my torts to a new enclosure...it's a 40 gal breeder with the proper lighting and heating, then I will get a bigger tank/enclosure for him in a year or so...Does anyone know anything about "Top Shelf Exotics"? They have them for $150, but have not returned an e-mail i sent them a week ago...I don't want to haggle over an animal that i'm hopefully going to have for 20 years or so, but i also would rather not drop 300 on one...thanks!

The breeder that has them for $350 (Robyn from Pro Exotics) has top quality animals, truly captive bred, robust and healthy. You would never be sorry if your animal came from him. There are so many dealers (not breeders) that buy tons of wc stuff and then tell you it is cb. Sometimes it works out, other times it creates nothing but heartache. There are people on here who can tell you some real horror stories about buying an animal for $150 only to put in many hundreds more at the vet and still end up with a dead animal. Having both cb and wc animals myself, I would always choose the cb ones when I know the breeder. Maybe it would be worth you while to wait a bit and buy from a breeder known to have a good reputation. There are also some breeders on here that do get wc animals, and keep them to make sure they are well acclimated, eating well and healthy before they are sold, so that is another option. One that doesn't even bother to answer your inquiry is not someone I would be too excited to deal with. Best of luck with your search, I hope you find what you are looking for. Welcome to the forum.

i absolutely intend to get captive bred and have crossed top shelf off my list since they couldn't even get back to me...I would not buy and do not believe in WC animals in any way...My 3 red-foot torts and most of my fish and corals in my cichlid and reef tanks are captive bred...I did e-mail 2 other places that appear to have Ornate Uro babies available: "LLL Reptiles" which is supposed to be very reputable, but i'm not sure if theirs are cb and then "Reptile City" also has cb babies...ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT EITHER OF THESE 2 BUSINESSES? I know I can wait until i have the $350, but i just think that's too much to pay for any animal other than a dog, but that's just my opinion...Thanks!

as said above, the "super deal" Uros on the market are typically wild caught, and usually come with a number of hidden charges that ring up after the sale, including vet visits and deworming cycles, and those types of costs often offset the difference between "super deal" wild caught and captive bred pricing.

the worst case scenario is to buy a wild caught animal, pay for the vet visit and necessary treatments, and then still lose the animal. that happens WAY to often. the funny thing is, folks will then call the captive breeder, and ask for a discount, because "i have already lost $300 on a previous Uro deal gone bad".

start with the best possible animal you can afford. if you have to save for a few months, so be it. if you simply can't afford a healthy Uro, then perhaps consider another species more affordable. make the best choice for you and your animal : )

as for LLL Reptile, they get in some fine animals, including captive bred/born Ornate Uro babies from Bushmaster Reptiles. if those are the ones they are offering for sale, certainly consider them, a number of terrific Uro breeders have worked with that stock, and at PE we have as well. they were solid, strong babies.

again though, you get what you pay for. while Doug Dix or Lindsay Pike may hold your hand through the entire purchase and Uro life, LLL is not that type of company, hence their more affordable pricing. the "polishing" of the animal is also left up to you, and if you don't have the specific Uro experience, that may not be the easiest task.

lots of things to consider in making the purchase, but your inquiry shows you are already off on the right foot : )

last but not least, consider supporting the Uro breeders that sponsor this forum, right at the top of the page : )
