OH new legislation, meeting to discuss @1 pm, Dec 11 - see post

nekomi Dec 04, 2005 06:49 PM

Hi everyone,

I heard today through an exotic animal mailing list that OH is currently drafting restrictive legislation regarding reptiles and other exotics. Unfortunately, I don't have any information on the bill, but there is going to be a meeting to discuss this new legislation and begin working to counteract it. Owners of herps, exotic felines, exotic canines, primates, etc. are all encouraged to attend. From what I've been told, copies of the legislation will be handed out at the meeting.

The discussion will take place this Saturday, December 11, at 1:00 pm at:

Olde Summit Towne Restaurant
14163 Broad St. SW
Pataskala, OH 43062

PM or email me at nekomi@winds.org with questions - I have contact info for the organizer of this meeting if interested.

The location is only about a half hour drive from western Columbus, so please try to make it if you can... we need to stay informed on upcoming legislature if we want to continue in our hobby!

I highly recommend that any that can go to such meetings, DO go to such meetings. Even if testimony isn't allowed (and you never know when it might be allowed), the legislators and government officials do take notice of how many people are "for" and how many are "opposed". I learned the hard way at the recent Judiciary briefing in MD.

I agree, I highly recommend that anyone that can attend to please do so. Defend your rights/privileges!

I have heard through the grapevine about this meeting, however I have some questions:

1. The date listed here is "Saturday" December "11" - is this Saturday or Sunday???
2. Who is hosting this - Interested pet owners group or is this legistlative group driven??
3. Is anyone familiar with the proposed and who is proposing the legislative actions???
4. I would be VERY interested in coming and being informed about potential restrictive laws and helping to prevent such action - however Saturday is the Columbus show and Sunday is the Cleveland show making attendance difficult.
5. Would also be great meeting others with similar interest - several of us have discussed an interest in starting a central ohio herp group - this type of common goal works to bring folks together!!!!
Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

Hope I can answer some of your questions...

1. My apologies, it IS Sunday the 11th. Not sure how I made such a dumb mistake...!
2. It is being hosted by interested pet owners in Ohio.
3. The group's coordinator has copies of the legislation, which she will be passing out at the meeting. I'm not sure if she is familiar with who proposed the bill.
4. Yes, the shows may make things difficult for some people, but you can always go to the show earlier in the morning before the meeting... unfortunately I'm not the organizer of this event, I just wanted to pass along the info.
5. I think a central OH herp group is a wonderful idea! I'll also enjoy meeting others with an interest in herps.

Thanks for the interest in the meeting, hope to see you there...

No problem on the date - ghee how many of use do that all the time - don't know about others, but sure do - SMILE.... Was actually hoping it was Saturday because Saturday's show is Columbus so could have probably made the meeting.

We can't do the show earlier - Sunday's show is in Cleveland and we are all breeders who will have tables (in otherwords not just going and getting a few things and leaving). I am VERY much interested in hearing information and will try to find some folks to attend and bring back information.

In the mean time do you know anything about the bill - sponsor, #, anything....... I would appreciate any information at all.

Please keep us posted.... THANKS,,,,,,,,,
