Sterilite shelving racks OK for kingsnakes?

waspinator421 Dec 04, 2005 06:55 PM

I was at the store today looking for something else, but happened to walk through the storage bin section. I saw a stackable plastic drawer type container that looked like it would work for a snake (though I would need to find a slightly larger one for an adult). Obviously it isn't snake-proof as the drawer easily slides out, but I can block that. I am wondering if this would make an acceptable snake enclosure (with a few air holes drilled, of course) for a kingsnake? Anyone have experience with these? Also, how small of a hole can an adult squeeze through? Thanks!

I have been going against my own judgment looking into a rack system and from what I have seen none of the drawers sold in the store will hold a snake. You need to look at all angles including when the drawer is closed along the side and tops. Most people on her use sweater boxes and the like that are then placed in a custom rack system. i have found a unit that comes pretty close to ready to go in Lowes. It is in their shelving area and is intended for use in a closet. It has solid particle wood shelves and only comes with two shelves. With two extra shelves and one extra set of holes drilled at the bottom it will hold 5 drawers pretty well. I have not finished it yet but the base price of the shelving system is about $35-40 dollars plus the extra shelves and the drawers. All totaled it is about $100 or so for 5 drawers. If anybody has cheaper ideas please let me know. I am about to start buying 7-10 of these units over the next couple of months.

I came across a site that had a nice and simple rack, here's the site; www.dozierstudio.com/ladderrack.html

My girlfriend father is a artist who does murals. He is amazing at taking a flat wall and making it look like it is curved or putting a room in the wall or just about any other crazy thing he thinks of. He painted a floor in a restaurant to make it look like a staircase going into a cellar and they owners ended up covering it up after a lady fell on a table trying not to fall down the stairs that where not there. LOL

Anyway I have four of his old cages that he painted for himself when he kept hots. They are all great cages plus the paintings. I have never got good photos of all of them but I need to. From the right angle they have no corner and seem way deeper than they are. The one in the pics was my favorite as it is with everybody who sees them but with a little time most people like one of the others more.

Look in the Caging Forum and scroll down to a few days ago. Someone posted pics of such a setup. So simple, and really inexpensive. Keep in mind, there will be some customization necessary to ensure no escapes.
