Important
Exotic Animal Owners’ Meeting

There were will be an informational and organizational meeting regarding the
upcoming restrictive Ohio legislature which is presently being drafted. This
law, when voted on and placed in effect will effect the current and may prevent
the future ownership of reptiles, felines, primates and many others.
We need to get organized NOW if we want to maintain our rights.

The meeting will be held at
Olde Summit Towne Restaurant
on December 11th, 2005 at 1 pm.

Lunch Buffet is optional at a cost of $11.50.

The address for Olde Summit Towne is 14163 E. Broad Street, Pataskala, OH
43062.

Please contact Evelyn Shaw at 740-964-9040 if you have questions or need
directions.

there is a good chance that i will be there. i'd prefer to just be "support" for dean or someone i agree with than on my own 2 legs. never been to one of these before and wouldnt wanna appear to be ignorant.

zagarus42 Dec 06, 2005 10:51 AM

Unfortunately, there is no chance I will be able to make it. I hope you guys take real good notes. I would really be interested in finding out what exactly is being said in the legislation. We need more details before we can figure out what to do.

Unfortunately, I don't think it looks to good. When stuff like this happens the trend seems to be starting online petitions and the like. I think petitions like that are worth crap. Not to mention, many of the people who sign them say some pretty stupid stuff and end up doing more damage to the cause. The only way we have a chance of making any difference is if we act intelligently and maturely.

goini04 Dec 06, 2005 02:07 PM

I agree Jason! I personally dont think a petition would be a good idea unless one respectable person writes the letter and people sign and ONLY sign. That would be the best way to go about it if you were doing a petition. Sorry to hear you can't make it, but I will try to post a copy of the bill whenever I get a copy. A member from my organization will try to get me a copy ASAP.

Thanks Chris!

I wouldn't say I am against all petitions, it just seems a few of the ones that have been floating around online looked less than respectable.

If people feel it would help, I think one like you mentioned would mean much more. Unfortunately, having a nice paper petition raises the problem of how to get enough signitures. Hopefully, better ideas can come out of these meeting than a petition.

1:00 PM on a Sunday during football season...and on "battle of Ohio" week. Rough.

I have a feeling this is just a few people talking and may be very preliminary.

You guys think it's worth it?
If the consensus is it's worth it, I'll try to make it.

Also, I did some searching and couldn't find anything on this proposed law. Who could be called in the state to find out the proposals and what they entail?

goini04 Dec 07, 2005 09:36 AM

I have requested from my guy in my org, to mail me the documentation. I will post it when I can!

ill be at my parents place on saturday and dont plan on heading up to this unless you are or someone else who knows what to say. i dont care either way, unless of course we dont go and in the near future all of my animals get compensated or i have to pay outlandish pricing to get everything microchipped.

j-cal Dec 07, 2005 01:31 PM

i typoed i meant to say "confiscated" but i typed fast and must've been paying too little attention.

Does anyone have a link to a copy of the proposed legislation? I looked at the Ohio Revised Code and sections 1534.01 1534.14 and 1534.99 were no where to be found. I couldn’t find a link to any proposed new legislation. I would like to read what exactly might be passed into law.

I search the Ohio Legislature's website, and was unable to find anything currently up before the house or senate pertaining to this. If Chris (goini04) has access to the proposal, along with a list of sponsers of the bill, that would help greatly.

Other than that, I think that Dean is probably right, inso far as this sounds like a preliminary/organizational meeting.

Yes, I am going to try to get ahold of the information we need, hopefully a few days BEFORE the meeting. According to the people in my org. that had previewed me to the bill, it is leaning towards current owners will be able to keep what they have, but specific caging requirements will be delt and PIT tagging will be required for identification. Once you no longer have possession to the animal due to finding it another home or death or whatever be the case, you will be unable to obtain any more. That is just what I was told. I am not going to go too far until I have seen the proposal with my own two eyes. I have contacted John and he says that he has a copy which is 29 pages long. He will try to get it to me ASAP.

Ok here's the deal, I managed to get more information.

Basically, there is no proposal set in stone AS OF YET. There is a proposal in the works and they have a contact who was able to get a copy of the rough draft of the proposal. Basically, the purpose of this meeting would be to unite all of the exotic animal keepers and try to work FAIR regulation as opposed to an all out ban. Most of the other states that have been gunned down have had this happen because they were not organized and weren't prepared....caught with their pants down is more the appropriate term. We don't want to be that way. We want to be ready to fight. While this may not be the EXACT proposal, it IS the rough draft and it DOES give information as to what will most likely being the REAL proposal. The goal of this meeting is to get everyone together to gather information as to what everyone feels is FAIR legislation as opposed to us being nailed with an all out ban. There will be a copy of the rough draft of the proposal present.

If I get any more information, I will sure to post it.

I have also just been told that there will be committee members there who are responsible for writing up the proposal.
