Update on my Yellow and a quick question/comment

metaldad904 Dec 05, 2005 08:37 AM

Well, i've had my Yellow for about 2 and a half weeks now and he's doing great i think. He's an eating machine! He shed last week, which i checked thoroughly.....complete and intact, including eye-caps...i was quite happy about that . Also, his aggression level seems to be going away pretty quickly. It seems like he's starting to trust me, and in turn, i trust him. It seems like his biggest pet peeve is quick movement. As long as i'm slow and gentle, he has no problems w/me, in fact, i think he kinda likes to slither around me. i'll put him on the floor and sit next to him a couple feet away and he'll slither into my lap or my arm, etc.

Here's something i wanted to see what everyone else thought about this. So far, i've noticed that he spends the vast majority of his time in the water. He just sit in the dish all day long and all nite most of the time. I think he does periodically come out during the day b/c i can see the slither marks where he has been, etc. But most of the time, he has seemed like he just wants 2 chill in the water. Well, last nite i decided to try something and see how he reacted. I've been using aspen substrate w/damp spagm moss and damp paper towels in his hideout to give him a humidity box. Well, he has never seemed all that interested in it. Last night I found this brick of substrate that u stick in water and it expands into this enormous blob of moist soil. Well, i rung it out the best i could and placed a layer in half of his cage including his hide-out. Within 15 minutes, he was out of his water and in his hide coiled up and chillin w/his head poking out just a little. Throughout the whole nite he was so much more active than i have ever seen him. He was exploring his cage, would go into the water, then come back out and go back to his hide-out. He just seemed so much more content with this. I've been keeping the cage at a consisten 85-87 degrees w/humidity ranging from 50-60% most of the time. Is this unusual or did i do the right thing? He seems as healthy as i could ask for, his temprement has been steadily getting better and better. I wanna make sure i'm doing all the right things i can and see what the more experienced conda owners think.

thanks for all responses..

Sounds like u found some coconut bark, or eco-earth. I use it and my yellow has never had a problem. Maybe your snake was interested in his new bedding or maybe he wanted a temp change?
I keep the basking spot in my cages close to 90 degrees and at night my temp usually fall to the high 70s - low 80s. I noticed you said u keep it at a constant 85-87. My guess is that the bedding being fresh and damp was a bit cooler. Is it possible he wants a cooler spot and a hot spot? I think thats what the majority of people do. Just my guess.
Congrats on your progress, sounds like u'll have a nice tame yellow shortly.
