Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

paulbuck Dec 05, 2005 08:42 AM

While playing around Puerto Vallarta this last week I came across a couple of snakes I'm hoping to get some ID's on.
The first was found in the hills above Quimixto; about 7-8 inches long:

This second one was found north of Bandaras Bay in heavily forested hills (I think still in Jalisco):

The third snake found got away in the brush. It was found in the thorn scrub near the ocean nr. Puerto Vallarta; uniform brown, racer type snake chasing a lizard.
Thanks for any help!
Paul

Paul,

The first snake is a young Speckled Racer (Drymobius margaritiferus). NO question here.

The second snake is a species of Rhadinaea, but I don't know which one. Maybe Rhadinaea taeniata?

The third snake could be a young Neotropical Coachwhip (Masticophis mentovarius), but it would be hard to pin down from the description.

If you post this on the field herping forum at fieldherpforum dot com, there are two people there who are very familiar with the herpetofauna of SW Mexico. They will know the Rhadinaea for sure and may have a better guess about the brown racer-type snake.
