Mexican night snake??

wisema2297 Dec 05, 2005 10:24 AM

Has anyone ever heard og these types of snakes. It is called the Mexican Night Snake. I saw it at a pet store that deals mainly in corn snakes. The owner was not there but the employee new nothing about it. I has a head like any other rat snake from this part of the hemispher but has a pattern kind of like a king snake. Also the top of its head has a weird pattern that I've never seen before( I call it spaghetti because it looks like a winding spaghetti noodle ). Is this a breed or integrade "mutt". It is very cool looking.

Yes, you're talking about the Mexican Night Snake. Also called the Mexican Corn Snake, or Tamaulipan Ratsnake. Latin name (Elaphe flavirufa.) They are very hardy Ratsnakes that you keep pretty much like cornsnakes. However, they do like to climb more then corns, so keep a branch or two in their enclosure. Also, most important, these snakes do better equiped to handle meals that are on the smaller size. You don't want to feed these guys larger meals like you would an obsoleta rat, or even a cornsnake for that matter. Below is a picture of my 04 female. She is fed one large pinkie a week at this size. Sometimes two.

Here's a picture from another angle. I'm not sure about the head pattern you're talking about on the one you saw, but true Elaphe flavirufa are a 100% pure species. Not an intergrade, or hybrid. If your interested in one, try Jim Sargent at Split Rock Reptiles. He's one breeder I know that produces these beautiful snakes.
