Has anyone ever had a mouldy egg hatch?

lzrdldy530 Dec 05, 2005 01:59 PM

I found 2 eggs in White Lips, Big Red and Beauty's cage and set them to hatch. Both turned mouldy but 1 has grown appreciably and I wonder whether it could hatch. Anyone know?

only time i've ever had anything that had any mold on it hatch was when i knew the area where the egg was incubating was contaminated with egg yolk from a previous hatchling. also, along the bottom of the egg where there were noticeable stretch marks that had seeped slightly i believe.

Hhhmmm. The eggs were a little mouldy when I found them. The goofballs didn't use the nest box but left them under "furniture" which I found when I was vacuuming their repticarpet.
I can't think why else the one is growing if it isn't good. Guess I'll wait and see.

Terri,

I think what you're seeing is the mold growing...not the egg. Without going into too much detail, the mold that you're seeing is actually caused by the decay process. If you leave them in there long enough, you'll see that the side of the egg will collapse soon.

I had a egg that looked like it had a little mold on it. the egg started to grow but what happend was that the embreyo was eaither dead or stopped developing and the contents of the egg started to rot and give off gas and that pressor from the gas made the egg look like what ever was in it was growing

hey, i had a similiar experience to yours. i got a pair of eggs from one of my girls, and put them in the incubator. well i left them in there for about a month, and they were turning more and more yellow with each day, so i decided to throw them out. well i cut one open, and out came a half formed baby gecko. i felt horrible for what i did, so i always give them a chance until its realy noticable that they are bad.

Yeah, I gave up on one once after 4.5 months (no incubator, just room temps in winter) cut it open and there was a beautiful baby gecko staring out at me. Totally freaked me out, but I could find no pulse and then noticed that it had no digits. The vet school suggested that maybe it hadn't developed properly due to the cold incubating temps, but darn, it had gotten close.
