Appearences of parasites?

l0co Dec 05, 2005 02:59 PM

If any of u have read any of my topics then u know im a begginner when it comes to keeping snakes

i have a snow (possibly ruby speckled snow) corn about a year old 90cm in length

he is about to shed (my guess is tonight in a few hours)
the thing is i recentley noticed something not quite right
he has some dull black tiny lines/dots on very VERY tiny areas
im afriad it might be mites or ticks (it doesnt move and seem to stay there though it doesnt resemble anything alive (no legs mouth or anything that a tick or mite might have)

i hope it will come out with the upcomming shed but nevertheless - for this specific occasion and future uses can u guys please post pictures of snakes with any kind of parasites uve heared of? it will really help me with being able to identify such parasites in the future

thanks in advance

mites look like the dots....................

that's it....little round balls that move and suck blood..

they will pop and have blood in them if they are mires.......blood that is old will look black to brown.....

............you will find dead mites in water bowl

probably not mites....they come off.......pigment dots don'tcome off............

thing is that the things im talkign about are not dots
its as if a "smear" in between scales

If they're mites, you should see them moving around. AND, if you hold your snake, you should get some on your hands with an occasional smear of blood as one gets squashed between your hand and the snake.

As a preventative, I spray my cages with a product called Reptile Relief by Natural Chemistry. According to the instructions, you can even spray it directly on the snake (just be careful of the eyes). When I apply it to my snakes, I spray a cloth and let the snake crawl through it. I do this periodically AND when I get a new snake. Thus far, no problems!
