My Nabire green tree python: i have some ??

toverstr Dec 05, 2005 10:01 PM

I just purchased this beautiful yellow CB Nabire tree python baby snake from a reptile show in atlanta. Cost me some $$ but well, well worth it. Anyways I put him/her in its environment and there seem to be no problems, accept it was a 30 gallon tank. I soon read on the forums that you need to put babies in a smaller container (rubbermaid). Which I’ve done now. I’ve had him for 4 days, the guy I bought him from said he was eating frozen pinkies once a week. Well I tried feeding him and he didn’t eat. I took him out of the cage(30 gallon) to put him in another environment to feed him, but no go. My question is do you feed him in his environment or put him in another container?? I figured since I just made him a smaller environment I would wait a couple of days before I try again so he can adjust. But surprising enough when I held him it was awesome. Didn’t strike, just a little jumpy but he wrapped around my arm and was generally calm, I was very surprised since I’ve heard how testy they are as babies. How often should I hold him as a baby to tame him?? And any other additional info. that you think I should know would be nice. I am an experienced handler but this is my first tree python.

Babies are quite fragile, so holding them should be kept to a minimum. It might be that the baby is getting stressed from being held and moved and so isn't eating. You might try leaving it alone for a week or so, and then try feeding again. I feed mine in the enclosure. Substrate ingestion is a minimal problem since they don't feed off of the floor.

This may seem like a stupid question but when you said he is eating frozen - are you trying to feed him a frozen pink? Or are you defrosting it and heating it up before giving it to him?

Could the baby possibly be nearing shed? Sometimes they won't eat because of that.

I dont know? he could be because two nights after i brought him home and I had him in the 30 gallon reptile tank he was circling it. Then i looked closely at the glass and saw some sheded skin. But from what i know they are supposed to shed in one piece and his skin looks bright and not dull. is there any way you can tell with their eyes? do they go cloudy?

GTP's can be difficult to tell if they are in blue. They certainly aren't as noticeable as, say, my cornsnakes. Their skin is so much finer, that most of the time, I can only tell by their behavior. They should shed in one piece, but if you're humidity was too low, they will shed in pieces. Babies can shed as often as every 3-4 weeks.
