My pair of reds are going at it.

fishkiller Dec 06, 2005 09:58 AM

Woke up this morning after putting them together last night to find their tails wrapped up.Hopefully this year she'll produce. They've only been cooled down for a month at 80% but my male cage is a little smaller on the same thermostat and was a little hotter so I hope that didn't mess anything up.Only time will tell.Wish me luck.My girl is 43 lb and my male is 18 lb.

Hey Ethan,
That's awesome news! I know you've been looking for while for a female right? or was it a male? Anyhow, either way, you finally have your pair, and they are doing the deed. Good luck!
Send or post a picture of the new acquisition.

I got this male last year around the same time.I've posted a few pics of him.Nice red coloration with a stripe. My female is finally doing good.I found that she just had a runny noise and with the higher temps I put up to help with her just dried up her nose and she couldn't breath through her nostrols.Hope she can handle the load if she takes.Later Ethan

Hey,
Good to hear that she is doing well. I am actually on the way to the vet after this reply, to pick up some meds from my vet. Jet has another RI, and has been sick for a bit. We did a tracheal culture and they found a Bordetella sp, which is a known agent for URI's, and also, the known cause for kennel cough in dog's. Anyhow, we are trying him out on a different drug today. An antibiotic called Cefotaxine *(Classon-Claforan). Keep you posted on the process.

Well hope all goes good atleast your on top of it.Man I think these snakes vet bills end up costing more than a dog or a cat.Especially if you go the full check to find whats really going on like your've done.

Kelly_Haller Dec 07, 2005 01:24 AM

There are several different species of Bordetella with most types only affecting mammals. It is rarely the cause of reptilian RI, but it has occurred. Cefotaxime (Claforan) is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and usually works well against gram-negative aerobes, such as Bordetella is classified. I have never used it myself, but please let me know what success you have with its use. What dosage and frequency was prescribed? Good luck,

Kelly

Hey Kim,
I was able to talk to the vets assistant today and get some information on Clorafan. The Clorafan is dosed at 200mg/ml, but is being administered at half that dose: .5ml which equals 100mgs. That would make it approximately, 10mg/lb (20mg/kg). Jet is approximately 11lbs. The med is being administed IM each day for 10 days total. Hope this helps.
