Best Heating for a Barrs Cage?

toshamc Dec 06, 2005 01:23 PM

I'm currently using a standard lightbulb during the day and flexwatt during the night for heating (attached to thermostat) and since the spring this set up has worked perfectly. With winter setting in the flexwatt at night is no longer doing the job for good night time temps.

The cage is a Barrs 12x12x16 with a vent at the top - I like using the light during the day (to show off the snake)- but obviously can't use it at night. Not sure if they make heat panels that will fit in such a small cage - but if they do, then I will loose the light during the day. Also he's fairly obsessive compulsive about perching as high up as he can get - so I need to make sure that it's not too hot on him either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What I used to do years ago is use bulbs in the day time and ceramic heat emitters at night. They are alot cheaper now a days and they last a long time. I bought two fixtures so i could turn one on and the other off. Doug Barr will make the cages without the vented top if you buy another cage when he gets bigger.

I didn't know you kept Chondros I thought you were a Ball Freak =-)

Thanks Tim - yeah - Doug asked me if I wanted one with or without the screen top and I thought I should get the screen if I wanted to use the light to show off the snake - I also got the vet cover so it's not totally exposed. I guess the ceramic heater would be worth a shot - that way I'll just switch out the bulbs at dusk. Just worried about kiling the huidity in that little cage.

And Yeah - I'm a ball freak - but when I got a look at some of the snakes in this forum - I had to have one - my kids got me my little guy for Mothers Day - so now I've got a chondro too. LOL - but as much as I love these guys the balls will always rule the house I think!

Thanks again.
