Dwarf caiman getting a green mold?

reptileforest Dec 06, 2005 05:32 PM

Hey all,

I bet its not unusual, but since I am new to corcodilians, I will go ahead and ask to make sure. I own a dwarf caiman, approximately 16 inches long. He spends a lot of time in the water and I recently noticed and accumulation of green slimy mold on his upper back. Same kind of mold that grows in the tank if you leave it untouched. But my tank shows no mold on it and everythinbg is rather clean for the most part. Is it typical for crocs to grow this green crap on their backs at times? I can rinse it off bc I dont want any rot or anything. Any ideas on what to do will be appreciated.
Thanks

PS: I have a misting system that blows out mist all over the cage 3 times a day. at 9 am (runs mist for an hour) at 3 pm (for an hour) and at 12 am (for an hour). Might that be the cause? Maybe one hour of mist a day should be enough for him.

The 'green mold' is algae. It isn't a mold and won't give you any problems. There is nothing wrong with algae on it's back but if you wish to clean it off that would be fine also.
