Black Tails hooked up!!!!!

bthacker Dec 06, 2005 07:54 PM

I am totally excited about these guys hooking up. This the first attempt at breeding colubrids since getting back in the hobby after a 9 year or so hiatus.

I noticed after a long shed the female was looking kind of chubby like she might be ovulating. I had put them together a couple of weeks ago with the female fleeing and not wanting to make any contact whatsoever with my male who didn't seem that interested anyway. Well the temps were a bit lower in my snakeroom at around 70 degrees and I sprayed the males enclosure with them still in there and I came home from work to see them hooked up!

Unfortunately they are in a spot where I can't get a good photo as it's really close to the edge of the glass but I really don't want to disturb them anyway.

I have a gravid BCI due valentine's day and it looks like I might be busy afterwards if all goes well!!

Any comments or tips would be appreciated.

Wish me luck.....

I just took this. They seem like they are in a transe.

whoever sold them to you was not being entirely square with you. What you are hearing is the opinion of the majority of Dry keepers, that we prefer to keep the subs as "pure" as we can..The BT you have is a classic, the other is an intergrade. Uni's and BT's do overlap in range and interbreed in the wild, therefore, "browntails"..

True Uni's are Khaki/Golden and do not change color thru out their length(look at Dannio's or my pics in the Gallery) Pure BT's look the one you have. Obviously a pure BT..

It's just that we Dry keepers, and you are one, think they are, well, magical animals. And purity is something we prize highly.
Don't get so bent out of shape about the criticism. Some of us are more passionate and write before we think sometimes, me included. Just be glad you didn't mate an Eastern with a Uni!!!

What you do with the product of the mating is up to you. If you get eggs(and don't count on it, these are not cornsnakes!)they will still be Dry's and nice animals..Probably look more like BT's would be my guess..

Just enjoy your animals and chill..Try to get a "pure BT" for your nice one if you buy my opinion..Happy Holidays..

Thanks Carl.....I appreciate the post. I noticed under the BT gallery a couple of photos of animals that don't have jet black tails. Would those be intergrades as well? Because my male looks awfully close to those.

Anyway, I am not going to trip over it. That male is a beautiful animal and you are right, if I do get hatchlings they more than likely will be nice looking animals. If the consensus is that they are not true BT's then I will not advertise them as such. I am still expecting an e-mail back from the gentleman I traded for my group to give me a little more info on who he got them from and maybe that will shed some more light on the subject. The guy I got them from is a great guy and maybe didn't know himself if they were true BT's or not.

I appreciate the info and the manner in which you and a few others have addressed this subject. I am not here to taint the "pure" bloodlines and I am definitely not out to make a quick buck on these animals. I have even trimmed down my collection of boas and other snakes to be able to better care for these guys. Hopefully I can add a few more Dry's to my collection soon.

I will get some more pics up of my collection, including my "brown tail" as soon as he is finished...

Again thank you.......Have a happy holidays yourself.
