HELP!!! with RETFs

TheGreenMan Dec 06, 2005 10:09 PM

I recieved some RETFs last week. Other than one or two rubbed noses they seemed fine and apparently had been treated for parasites. Yesterday they seemed fine but today one was dead and the other will probably not make it through the night. I found the dead one on the sphagnum moss and the other was in the water portion (water is about 1/4 in. deep) slightly spread-eagle and nose down in the water. There seems to be nothing physically wrong with them.

What could be wrong with them?

Should I move the frogs to a new cage and clean the big one again?

My set up is some smooth rocks I rinsed off on half of a 20 long tank. With sphagnum moss on top of the rocks. The other half is just aged tap water.

What are is temp and the humidity of your tank?
I would recommend getting rid of the spaghnum for RETF's... get some coco bedding (bed a beast or something similar) and use it. Also, you need some plants in there for the frogs.. RETFs need leaves to hid on.. Pothos is easy to grow and works well for them..

Where did the rocks come from? rinsing them is more than likely not a enough.. also, if there are small enough, RETF's can swallow rocks and result in death as well..

I never heared that sphagnum moss was not ok to use with red eyes. Why would the coco bedding you mentioned be better?
The temp in the cage is
The top of the cage is wire mesh but I covered it with 3 plasic zip lock baggies to help hold in moisture.
At the moment I have some fake vines with leaves in the tank. I think they are from Fluker.

Thank you for your help

Id definatley get them out of there and in to a stress free hospitol tank. it could be any number of things wrong with your frogs, pictures of the frogs, your tank, and as many details as possible will help.

Also, I would contact your supplier or breeder and let them know. they might also be able to help you figure out what is wrong.

greenman.. some people have had problems with RETF's eating spaghnum on accident when dive bombing the crickets.. it will cause impaction.. and more than likely death. Coco bedding works find for growing plants and is easily digested..
