2 liter engines????

RoyerReptiles Jul 23, 2003 03:17 PM

O.K. I have to assume that in Europe/England 2 liters is big. I'm sitting here wondering what exactly a 2 liter car is useful for. Might as well drive a motorcycle.

We are a nation of commuters. I commute 17 miles one way to work. My father commutes 45 miles one way to work. I don't like to live in town. I value my privacy and like to keep my horses at home instead of a boarding stable, so I have to live outside of the city limits.

The vehicle I drive has a 6 liter engine. You know why? Because I use it. I hauls tons of hay and horses and whatever else needs hauling (although you find yourself moving your friends alot when you have a truck LOL) In the area I live in (West Texas) you'll often find yourself lacking if you don't have access to a truck. My truck has a 26 gallon gas tank. Of course, it only costs $35-40 US to fill it.

We live dramatically different lives just based on the geography of our countries. We do live in a very vast space and depend heavily on two main modes of transportation...POV and air. I suspect if public transit/mass transit were available on a wider scale, more people would utilize it. In the meantime, I applaud the research that is going into hybrid cars (you get a tax break if you buy one, too!)

Well, the majority of cars in Europe are between 1 and 2 litres. I, personally, drive 28 miles to work, and 28 back. OK, I understand if you need a truck, then so be it. However, it is totally unnecessary to have a truck that does say a mile to the gallon. Fuel resources are not unlimited and the amount of pollution large engines produce is unacceptable.

I was simply asked a way to reduce pollution, and that was an idea. Please, I can do without the immature banter and Freudian BS / macho crap about engine sizes!

RoyerReptiles Jul 23, 2003 05:12 PM

I understand that you are on the defensive right now, so I'll excuse your attitude.

Immature, macho banter? First off, I'm a female. Second, I was simply pointing out a dramatic difference in the lifestyles of Europeans and Americans. I'm all for reduction of pollution and more efficient engines. Personally I wish alot more money were spent on researching alternative energy sources.

Oh, and even Americans, the ones who actually use the big engines they drive despise those who have them as status symbols. They are called "yuppie posers". LOL!

RoyerReptiles Jul 23, 2003 05:14 PM

Damn, ONE mile to the gallon? I get 17 and thought that was bad. Whatever gets that kind of gas mileage (unless we are talking about semi trucks) needs to be put to sleep!

H+E Stoeckl Jul 23, 2003 07:20 PM

... you would have to pay the European gas prices. In Germany the price for a gallon premium fuel is about US$ 5.

I am sure you would have a riot over there if such prices would be introduced to the people.

By the way, the main part of the gas price is taxes.

Actually, what kind of horses do you own?

That would be a resounding YES! I'd hate every minute of it, but we'd have to give up one of the trucks for a "grocery getter" that got good gas mileage.

We have American Paints...basically Quarter Horses that have too much white to be registered as such. We've got quite a variety around here. My neighbor breeds Trakehners (sp?) and my best riding buddy rides Thoroughbreds. Each to their own. I do agree with the European warmblood registry system...100 day stud trials and all that...very smart way to preserve the integrity of the breed.

Wrong again Stoeckl. at least you are consistent and we know what to expect. Our government isn't so ridiculous that gas prices are jacked up to $5/gallon because of taxes. You people have a government that you should be very suspicious of. That's your socialism at work.

You stated that we Americans are the type of people who would riot over high gas prices. The implication, of course is that we are uncivilized. Since world War 2 we've done a pretty good job of babysitting Germany to make sure you remain somewhat civilized. Your Hitler was a little pussy Nazi and the people of Germany to a large extent were behind him. I'm not naive, and I don't think that the thug mentality has completely disappeared from your illustrious country. Your implied support of terrorism is a case in point. You don't have the guts to explicitly show your support for those who've terrorized the US. Instead, you criticize Americans with your absurd articles and comments, without any proof, for terrorizing terrorists. Way to go Stoeckl, you're a real gem.

The latest Hummer that has just come into England does 1 mile per gallon. I defy anyone to think that isn't shocking!

scalawag Jul 24, 2003 07:17 AM

Then don't buy one crybaby!

RoyerReptiles Jul 24, 2003 08:54 AM

Ah, the H2 Hummer...the epitome of SUV status symbols. I despise not the vehicle, but the type of person who buys it...there is only one reason...but I won't get into that...but it does have somethign to do with insecurity (or small naughty bits !) And before anyone goes down that road, yes, I can afford one...and I would never buy it.

Marketed as a "real SUV", the damn thing is actually built on a modified suburban chassis and has virtually none of the original hummer's capabilities (especially when you don't have the right tires), so I don't know why anyone would even go there. They need to just admit that they want people to look at them. Everything I read says the H2 gets 8-10 miles to the gallon (which is less than the company published rates of 13-17).

herpconsultants2 Jul 24, 2003 09:15 AM

Good to see that I am not alone on this one! I find it incredible that the government even allows the vehicle to be imported. I mean it's illegal for factories to exceed pollution levels, so why shouldn't cars be controlled? The sad fact is that at the end of the day, the environment always comes last. And people who care about it, and 'play in jungles' to conserve it, are probably just wasting their breath.

Have a nice day anyway, you have been a breath of fresh air (pardon the pun) on this forum!

RoyerReptiles Jul 24, 2003 10:18 AM

Herpconsultant2,

It's all too easy to get carried away in "forum wars". I try to step back and realize this:

we're always going to disagree with someone else about something, and it might even make us really mad...BUT

somehow, no matter how hard it is to comprehend, we all have at least one thing in common.

It's entirely too hard to go through life "hating".

herpconsultants2 Jul 24, 2003 11:11 AM

True, true.

What has surprised me most is that I have repeatedly stressed that the only thing I hate is extreme and totally unnecessary violence. And yet I have been branded a marxist, a homosexual, a loser, a nazi, a cry baby, and so on. Admiteddly most of these have come from a rather small minded individual. However, I have been astonished by the sheer contempt for the rest of the world (i.e. outside of the US) by the majority of the forum users here.

Anyway, like you say, there are times to stand back, and now I think I should!

scalawag Jul 24, 2003 12:19 PM

Stop the insanity Herpes, you have not repeatedly stressed that you hate extreme and totally unnecessary violence". You are a cowardly liar and very small minded. You have conveniently JUST added the words "extreme and totally unnecessary". Your stance was absolutely against violence of any kind. Maybe YOU should go back and re-read YOUR OWN posts. The truth will smack you in the face. Nice try though.

You should be astonished at the sheer contempt that we have for the rest of the world. We've never really taken you seriously enough in the past to even bother responding. However, since 9/11, we have a new attitude toward those who wast to sabotage our efforts to protect ourselves. Meet the new America!

scalawag

PS I actually do hate you and others in England, Europe, and even the US, for hating those of us who are for the war. I certainly do not feel neutral about someone speakinf out against MY safety and freedom. At least, Herpes, I have the guts to tell you the truth.

herpconsultants2 Jul 24, 2003 01:12 PM

I think I say here, on behalf of myself, and most other people using this forum, that we feel VERY, VERY sorry for you. You seem to be only person demonstrating (and openly admitting) hatred. You clearly have no idea of world politics, democracies, and objective thinking. You cannot agree with anything I say, even when you ask me of ways to reduce pollution.

A 41 year old accountant you say. I'd bet at a 21 year old, working at a video store, somewhere in the hot old south. You have access to the internet. Use it. Search for definitions of terrorism. Learn about it. Learn why it starts. Basically, learn some more, and keep your childish remarks to yourself!

YOU look like a total fool here. You can now have this forum to yourself, because I now will not be returning! Good luck to you.

poosphere Jul 24, 2003 02:53 PM

That's it. Run away before giving us any solutions. That's what I thought.

scalawag Jul 24, 2003 05:54 PM

Herpes's act rings of the Guiness Book of World records. How many posts without a solution did he end up making?

I'm believe that only a vain type of person would buy something like that kind of vehicle. However, I have no problem with them doing so. That is their right, and Herpes, we do recognize individual rights in our great country. That's why we are superior to England.

scalawag Jul 23, 2003 08:51 PM

You may think it's unnecessary, but the truth is: IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS WHAT I DRIVE! You arrogant fool! We have measures in place to combat pollution, and I would guess that they are better (just like everything else) that the measurres England has taken. Nobody cares what you drive!

I apologize if any offense was caused by my post. My last paragraph was directed to the likes of Scalawag, who seem to feel it necessary to stoop very low and make extremely childish posts in reply to anything I say. I have had enough actually.
