heating a 10 gal tank

pinkcamel316 Dec 07, 2005 12:10 PM

What heaters would be good for a ten gallon tank when there's less than half of that in the tank? Mine's only got about 3 gallons at a time and the tiny heater I have doesn't seem to be holding up to the winter weather. What is the best heater I can get without over heating my turtle? 25watt?

Also, what kind of mix would be best to feed my turtle. Would using just crickets or blood worms in addition to pellets and lettuce be sufficient? Or do I need a mix of protien rich bugs? Thanks in advance.

i only feed pellets. live food can easily introduce parasites and diseases. most pellets are very nutritious and with a variety of 3 or more types of pellets you are almost guaranteeing a turly complete diet. the exception are highly herbivorous species. red eared sliders are the most common exception. as RES get older they need more vegetation and fresh produce, although if yours is in a 10 gallon and is a RES i hope it isnt big enough to need any fresh produce. i would use a stealth heater. it is a thermal plastic (not glass) heater and shatter-proof. honestly you should be looking for a new and bigger tank for him, they should grow pretty quickly if given the proper diet, lighting, and space. so if you havent been looking for a new tank and setup, you need to start. mine have always outgrown a 10 gallon within a month or two.
