a question about mealworms

taralynn_hughes Jul 23, 2003 03:25 PM

We are getting mealworms in for Roan for the first time, so I went into the archived forum and did a search, just to see what would come up. Somethings came up that kinda scare me. Do they really eat through their stomach? There was many posts saying it was bogus, but then there were a few posts saying that it happened to their chameleon. Whats the truth, and is there anything I should watch out for with mealies?

it wrong they are killed when the cham bites down.

dont feed to many mealworms as they are high in fat an phosphurous(spelling?) which takes away calcium production. i wouldn't feed more than 10 a week for adults, nomore than 5 for juv. and dont feed them to babies.

also if you can give Roan the melaies that have just moulted as they dont have the hard exoskeleton

It is absolutey not true that mealworms can chew through the stomach of a chameleon. First of all, it is crunched into several pieces by the time it reaches your chammy's tum tum.
Chamsrcool, Are you sure that mealworms are that much more high in fat and phosphorus? Altough the their fat% is a little higher, Mealworms has an almost equivalent nutritional make-up as a circket. I have consulted in a few nutritional charts to deduce this. However, each chart seem to be rather inconsistent in their ca ratio. some indicates that mealworms have higher phospurus levels, and some say that crickets do.
However, I hear lots of people using mealworms as a staple. I use mealworms as a staple for one of my panthers, much more than circkets. She seems to only want to eat mealworms. so far she is doing great. So i don't see a problem there.
