OT Christmas present

O.k. I'm thinking of getting my brother a baby beardie for x-mas. I don't know anyone on that forum. I've found a good breader local, so I know about the food and vits and lighting, but what would you suggest as a "starter" cage? I mean for a baby, what is a good size to start off with? Any info, advice. He has a flap neck chameleon, that is meaner then heck, so I wanted to get him something that he can at least pick up, but I don't want to get him a snake, so I'm thinking a beardie would be cool. plus he lives with me, so I'll get to help raise the baby too!!

I started Darwin out in a 20 gallon tank. He was just under 2 months (6" when I got him last April. He was fine in it. I put him into a small tub with the crickets so they would not run loose, he still eats them that way most fo the time (when he eats). I do recommned a temp gun if you do not already have one. I got mine when I got him so I could closely monitor his basking temps which need to be high (105-110) as a baby.

Just a thought on the breeder, I got Darwin from Stitch's "mom" and she has some other transparents from his line (different brood, but same parents). As I recall you are in WA? Not sure if it would be too cold to ship.

here's my favorite pic of him as a baby

I like the last pic, love the LOOK.

Pretty color too !

She was actually the first person I thought of, but the temps here are freezing! It's been a cold one this year. I got Stitch back in Dec of last year and it the temps were in the 40's. This year we are down to the 20's so I'm not to sure about shipping, especially since I want to get him a baby. But I would love to have Darwins Little Brother or Sister!! Maybe that could be his birthday present. That would be awesome!! They are so pretty!!!
I do have a temp gun, so I'll make sure to utilize it more! I was thinking of a 20 gallon, but I wasn't sure if it would be to small.
Thanks for the advice, and give the little Tree Hugger a kiss from me!!!

wow - you're just as cold as we are!

Darwin was in the 20 gal from 2 months until 4.5 months when I put him in the 75. He probably could have stayed in the 20 (you know, now that I think about it I think he was in a 30) for another month, but once I got that HUGE tank I wanted to get him in. He spent his first night in it and Luna died the next day That is why I remember exactly when I moved him.

Yes, a Darwin cousin would be cool! I'll have to upload some recent pics of him. He is a very pretty boy.

Does your brother know he is getting a bd?

Ya, I was looking at some really nice set-up's at my pet store. They have everything ready to go, I'm thinking I'll go with the 30 gallon for now.
No, my brother does not know he is getting a beardie. He has expressed interest in them and maybe a ball python. We bought some good reading material on both, but I have small dogs, so the thought of a snake that can potentially eat them is unbearable Sooooo, being the quick thinker that I am, I've also wanted a beardie...(hmmmm hope my fiance doesn't read this since he has put a stop to my collection) sooooooooo, if I get him one, and he does not want it, then it looks like I'm adopting it... get my draft.

I thought I had another pet when I bought him the Flap Neck, Boy is his name, but man he is MEAN ! ! He doesn't like anyone in the room except my brother and will literally come after you if you try to open his cage! I thought I could be his friend by giving him a few treats, but he will not eat anything I put in his cage. My brother can hold him, shower him, feed him from his hand, but I stay away from little Cujo!!! So that plan backfired on me!

I would say most are pretty sweet/docile, I had mine for 7 years , and lost him in brumation, super docile guy, LAZY as an adult
When I moderated on the beardie forum , there were a few now and then that would ask for help. They would proceed to tell you their beardie was vicious, and would actually run at them and attack and bite.

Some are biters, and do not like to be handled. I think if they were handled MORE, they would snap out of that.
But some owners are more fearful than the lizard and give up thinking they just have a mean one.

That's kinda why I wanted a baby, that we can start from little. And if they bite, it won't hurt as much!!

Darwin nipped me once as a baby and I don't know which of us was more surprised! Just don't spoil the new guy TOO much or you'll have one who doesn't mind having things dropped on his head and falling in his tank!
