Questions from a newbie..... Dwarf caimen

D Goudie Dec 08, 2005 06:48 AM

Hi Guys;

Have a few questions to ask regarding my new P palpebrosus.

How long should he be situated in his new home before he'll want to eat?? I noticed his 1st defacation in the tank this morning & I've increased his water temp to about 83 degrees, so far he has not taken any mice offered & i do know he's eating since he took 3 mice from me over a week ago while still at the shop.

I was also wondered what you guys do regarding fliter & heater cords?? is there a real danger of the caimen biting them & electrocuting themselves. I have a fluval submersible heater & a Fluval3 submersible filter. Ever morning the heather is out in the middle of the tank, the filter is boxed in with headstone trimmings from a local manufacturer & that stays pretty secure.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dean

I would try to cover up those cords. For a young caiman, you can use something like a wire loom to cover over the wire since their jaws aren't that strong at this age. However, if he's older, it would be recommended to take a few more drastic measure and just simply make them inaccessible.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Thanks Chris;

I'll keep that in mind, right now just in the process of getting him settled in, he's not hiding out as much now as earlier in the week & when his cage gets approached he'll let out a little assertive hiss.

What species of crocodillian do you work with??

Hi Dean,

I have an American Alligator and a young P. Trigonatus.

Thanks for asking,

Chris

You could also use rigid PVC pipe to run the wires through. Fasten the heater to the end of the pipe and that should keep it from getting kicked around the pool too.
