Cyclura and livefood

Fixx Dec 08, 2005 02:00 PM

Ok, risking a bit of controversy here but we had our 2yo male Cuban
Rock iguana, Castro in our viv room out and about whilst me and my partner were sorting out our livefood out prior to cleaning tubs, a small brown cricket made a bid for freedom and before we had a chance to catch it VOOM! Castro was on it faster than one of our monitor lizards. Anybody else witnessed this behaviour? I hasten to add that we only feed our Cyclura and Iguana on a herbivorous diet only and also know for a fact that Castro has never been fed livefood at all.

Hi, yes I have seen this behavior. All my cyclura will go nutty for a cricket or a superworm. I have to kick my rhino female out of the room when feeding my snakes as she wants to eat the frozen thawed mice AND the smaller snakes. Also eyes smallish geckos like, ooooh, I could totally fit that in my mouth.

They would all LOVE to be fed animal protein but alas, rarely get any. I really dont think the occasional cricket or super hurts so every couple of months I might throw one their way. I think it is fun for them them and on a VERY limited basis is just fine. Some people advocate feeding mice, even Melissa Kaplan I believe. I err on the side of caution and don't feed it out very often at all.
