Has anyone seen the prices on hypos......

ajfreptiles Dec 08, 2005 04:02 PM

I was just checking the classifieds, and the prices on some of the hypos offered are insanely low!

People should realize no one wants to ship at this time so that is why sales drop off.

What does everyone think about priceing here?

Where should hypos start at in price?

Just thought it might prove interesting....Andy

Hypos are one my favorite cultivars in boas, but I think the price drop is justified. Couple of reasons. One, they're easy to make. Two, a lot of people are making them.

I think the really exceptional hypos/salmons will hold their value for sometime.

I don't see them as being easy to make, at least not with 100% consistancy. Yet maybe the market has a bit too many hypos to absorb right now....

My thoughts were people were not seeing sales at higher prices and are dropping them in hopes of a sale.

Yah I've been seeing some cheap hypos also but most of them are offspring of hypo to normal breedings. I wouldnt buy another hypo unless I had a chance at a super..Rich

How come salmon boa has normals for sale from a hypo to hypo breeding?

topnotchboas Dec 08, 2005 05:07 PM

Hypo x Hypo statisticly yeilds 25% supers 50% hypos and 25% normals.

It could (unlikely) yeild 100% (non-super) hypos ...

and it also could (unlikely) yeild 50% (super) hypos and 50% normals.

Each parent gives the hypo mutation to half the offspring (approx), which half? Statisticly (approximately) 25% get it from both .. 50% get it from one .. and 25% from none (ie normals).

Thanks for clearing that up for me I always thought it was a 50/50 deal...huh you learn something new everyday..Rich

ReBall1 Dec 08, 2005 05:22 PM

So when someone says 50% possible super salmon its really only 25%?

mdc Dec 08, 2005 05:30 PM

Nope, 50% poss. supers comes from breeding a proven super salmon to a normal salmon. The results of this breeding are 50% supers and 50% non super hypos.

Think of it this way. Hypo is just het for super hypo. Compare this to a normal recessive gene like albinism. Super hypo x normal hypo is the same as albino x het albino. The only difference is you can tell which are albinos and which are hets. With the hypos, you can't tell which are super hypos and which are not, so you sell them as 50% poss. supers.

Hope this helps,
Matt

thanks guys I had a minor brain fart lol.. google and your posts helped me out, Im back on track..Rich

bigdnutz Dec 08, 2005 05:44 PM

If you have two normal hypos, not supers, one fourth (statisticaly) of all the offspring will be normal.

"cheap" hypo boas are well... ugly? Hypos seem to be a dime a dozen anymore. But top of the line hypos still seem to be in demand. Only the best bloodlines will sell at high or standard prices, whatever that may be.
