Cannibalism?

Dmitri1979 Jul 23, 2003 04:25 PM

I just acquired a leucistic TX rat snake and I want to house her in with my corn snake. They are exactly the same size. I realize that you shouldn't keep two snakes together, but yet I know that many experienced people keep multiples together without a problem. Is there really a risk of one of my snakes cannibalizing the other? I would put them in separate feeding containers during feeding time and feed them regularly. I've never heard of rat snakes eating each other...

It's just not a good idea in general, and if you MUST keep 2 snakes together, they should really be the same species (even then, it's not a great idea). Your Texas Rat will soon outgrow your corn, unless your corn is a monster or your TX is a runt.
Do them both a favor...get another cage. If cost is a factor...go with tupperware/sterilite, etc.
No, they probably won't EAT each other...but it will cause undue stress. Good luck ...they are both great snakes!

I wouldn't.
I had a fairly well fed baby corn eat a slightly larger
baby ribbon snake. I guess it just goes to show that baby
snakes will eat just about anything they can swallow wether
they are "supposed to" or not!
Not worth the risk IMO.
