cage plans - please advise

xenophon Dec 08, 2005 05:04 PM

I took the advice that I was given earlier, and have decided to build a 4x2x2 cage for a new bearded dragon. I currently have no idea how I'm going to get one, but I plan on either buying a cabinet and retrofitting it with the stuff I need (like a cabinet from Target or Lowes) or buying regular sheets of 1/4 or 1/8 inch melamine and building my own (the expensive way). Does anyone have suggestions or plans of what they did? As of now I have plans to cut one side and put two locking plexiglass doors in, and cutting two holes in the top and covering them with wire mesh for the lights, and installing a flourescent UVB bulb (or maybe MVB in one of the light holes). With a height like that could I just mount the lights on the inside of the cage? I've seen that on nearly all the pics of dragons cages on this site. Should I put a ventillation hole, or will enough air pass through the light holes ( I am planning on using 10' lights)?

Thanks,
xenophon

i've shown these pictures to lots of people who want to build a cage. I've built two of them so far. For wood i used 1"X4" pine. If you build it 4'x2'x2' and plan on using MVB then I would make the top out of metal screen with the big hole (not like whats in a window but rather chicken wire). MVB's don't put out that much heat so you may need to find a high wattage one or use two.
