Starting My Leo Setup This Weekend (last minute questions)

tbay Dec 08, 2005 09:54 PM

Ok, so I'm getting some leos soon. Probably just after Xmas when shipping is less risky, but I've abandoned the thought of using my 20 gallon tall tank, and I've decided to build one. I figured that a 3' x 18" base will be equivilant to a 33-34 gallon tank if it is 1' high. My questions are, do you think I could put 3 leos in here? Also, would it be ok for a beginning herper (or herpist, what do you call yourselves anways?) to start with this many? I have done a good bit of research and think I could handle it. I would probably be getting the leos from a breeder online, so hopefully that gives me a better shot at healthy ones.

3 would be the maximum. 2 would be better. Better still would be just 1. Geckos don't enjoy company. They do better if housed apart. You can keep 2 females together, but not male/female and never male/male. It is possible that you would not have any problems housing 2 females together, but if problems did occur, you would have to be ready to provide seperate housing.

I have always been told that females can be housed together and that people will be 1 male with 4-5 females all year round (in an appropriate sized container).

A beginner should not be breeding because it can be overwelming. I would really start with one (well i did) and then add to my collection. You can use your 20 gallon high right now for one and then build the bigger cage when you get the gist of it. You also have to be prepared to seperate them if anything happens.

Well I was already planning on 3 females. I've done my research, and everything I've read has said up to 10 females are ok together, just don't put 2 males, or a male and less than 3 females together. Even what I have read about aggressiveness between geckos seems like it could easily be cured with a good size tank. I doubt they would be aggressive, but I'm getting all captive bred and similar age. I was going to get them at about 4 months of age. I'm not breeding them, I just think it would make a cool looking enclosure if I had a few of them. There will be plenty of hides, and I may make the tank longer and slightly thinner so I can provide two basking areas. The only agressiveness I've heard about between females is during feeding, and if this is a problem, I will just remove them two at a time and feed the remaining one. I'll just get one if it's really going to be that much of a hassle, but out of hours of reading care sheets and other info on them, and posting a couple times with various questions, this is the first time I've heard of females being agressive towards each other.

ummmm...... males shouldn't be housed with females, even if there are more then three females im pretty sure.

I agree! First of all you should quarantine your leos separately.
Then you can start thinking of putting them togheter..
Even then that can produce too much stress on the females...
anyway, thats just my opinion!

p.d. first time owners shouldnt even try to breed...
another thing, the msale will try to breed with the females before they are ready for the task..

I am a first time leo owner myself. ANd on a bright note, I was given to juvi females for xmas about 2 weeks ago give or take a few days.

Since then.. I have worried and worried and asked a bucnh of questions on here, too.

The bright note... During the day and sometimes in the evening.. I will find both of my femles keeping each other company in one of the humid hides together. its like they take comfort in each other... Not stressful from what i can tell.. but again i am a new owener myself. I have checke and about every couple of days.. and from what i can tell they are definlty both female.

Since they are togther in the same tank, i named them Pinky and the Brain. :D
