Bulging eyes

Nippy Dec 08, 2005 11:23 PM

I work at a pet store and my PIC called me to let me know one of our Children's Pythons has what looks like fluid build-up in her eyes/eye caps. This condition isn't ringing any bells in my memory. Anyone else know what this is? We plan on calling a vet first thing in the morning, but I was going to attempt to see if anyone on here knew anything to see if I can get a head start.

It could be a number of things... Tears accumulated under the brilles due to a blockage of the lacrimal ducts, plasma accumulated from an inflammatory response nearby, or pus from a local infection all spring to mind, but it's the vet that will do the diagnosis. Something along the lines of an infection sounds likely, though.

In the meantime, keep the snakes at the high end of their thermal gradient (but be careful not to overheat them). This should help their immune systems fight off whatever's causing the problem, and although this is not in any way a permanent solution, it will at least give them a bit of help before they see the vet.
