feeding chicks/quail?

clarkman23 Dec 09, 2005 09:45 AM

Have any of you ever done this? I've heard that their feces can become quite smelly. I'm just looking for healthy alternatives to a rodent only diet (even though it is essentially a complete diet...I just want to change it up a little). Anyone have thoughts on this?

thanks,
Randy

Well, only heard of people doing it with Dumerils when they have a problem feeder. The stools are generally looser and more pungent when you first offer fowl into a snakes diet, but they can become accustomed to it from what I've heard and have more regular stools. I wouldn't want to risk having one of my Dumerils get a liking for fowl and then refuse rodents. I think mixing the prey up a little bit sounds like a novel idea, but possibly "gut loading" your rodents might be just as satisfying without nearly as many possible side affects. Heck, give it a go though, and maybe you'll be telling us of your animal gaining an overall better appearance, who knows??? Let us know what you do, and what the outcome appears to be if/when you do anything different. Take care

yeah, I'll probably get a few quail or chicks in my next rodent shipment and try them out with some of my snakes. My Dumerils has an amazing feeding response, as Taiwan Beauties so it's hard for me to imagine that they would get to a point where they would only accept birds.
