Anyone know conclusively one way or the other if a person has ever been killed by a boa constrictor in the US? If so, where can I find documentation for / against?

Also...# of deaths from burms/retics/rock/anacondas in the US?

I'm working on stats to have in my arsenal if needed.
We are currently up against a ban on constrictors that reach over 8'

THANKS

you can check out: http://www.anapsid.org/pdv-boid.html

melissa kaplan is a controversial figure in this industry, and in no way am i associated/associating with her, but she is not the subject of this post. the following info should answer your questions, but the short version is:

her info references a study over a 10 yr period:

deaths caused by boa constrictor, any type: ZERO

deaths caused by retic/burm (total together): 0.4 per year = 4 deaths in 10 years, with at least one or two being infant death resulting from a free roaming snake. i'd check that link and the referenced studies for the actual hard data, but it's a place to start.

also reference www.dogbitelaw.com for interesting canine data.

the numbers directly to the right of the species name refer to footnotes on her websites. the deaths caused by each species is the number BELOW the name.

Contact Tom Hudak.....

Here is his website- scalesandtails.com

He was one of the leaders in NY states fight against the proposed wildlife ban, that got us back the right to keep our boas, and the law was amended to be for only very large animals such as anacondas, Rock pythons, and scrubs etc...

Contact him, as he does alot of work in this area and could help you. Thanks Andy Federico
