geyri hatching!!!

dancetoday Jul 23, 2003 05:12 PM

I'm so excited!!!! I've got just four geyri eggs left but the first baby has its head out now. I can hardly wait. I've hatched lots of beardies and geckos but this is my first time to hatch uros. Anyone have any advice other than the fact that they need to eat some of the adult uro's poop? How long after hatching do they start eating? Do they sometimes have some retained yolk sac like beardies? -Lucy

I made the mistake at first of treating them like beardie eggs except keeping them hotter. I thought that if anything they would be a bit dryer, since they were from the desert. I had some instructions from Doug Dix but I'm not good at thinking of proportions of the medium to water so I just dampened it like I would for beardies (basically just how it works for me) but left the top off and misted them. That I've learned is a big mistake. Don't mist and don't leave the top off. They were withering so I would mist more. I had them in vermiculite but they were also growing mold because they had brought in some seed from the substrate they were laid in. So I finally wiped them off very carefully and moved them to fresh vermiculite, and put saran wrap with NO HOLES over the top and left them alone. I only lost one after that (I'd lost six before) and I don't really know why. It just started sweating suddenly then got slimy and died. Doug said that they may have had some mold on the inside. I couldn't tell that it looked any different than the others. I incubated at 92-94.
