Yes that is way too cold for them. Do you have any type of heating for them? They will surely die if left at those temps and it probably won't take long. I suggest either moving them immediately to a warmer part of the house or giving them to someone who knows what temps to keep them at.

BallPython13 Dec 09, 2005 06:12 PM

Ok, I just put them on there heating pads. I'll keep them warm for a few days. One more question want is the coldest Temp. I can keep them at during brumation. I plan on breeding them this season, this is my first time I am going to breed them. Thanks Scott

vermeer711op Dec 09, 2005 06:20 PM

Maybe someone else can give you that answer. I am no expert. I don't let mine go below 75F. I don't think it's a good idea to go for the lowest temp they can physically handle because it would stress them and(correct me if I'm wrong) they can get respiratory infections from being kept in temps that are too low.

ginebig Dec 09, 2005 06:33 PM

Brumation is NOT the same as hibernation. 75 degrees is probably the lowest you can go safely for any length of time. I would rather keep thm at a comfortable temp until you can better situate them and worry about the 'cooling period' later.

Thanks For Your Help vermeer711op!!! Thanks Scott

You don't know what temps are ok for BPs. Maybe you should worry about general husbandry before you try breeding. It sounds like you know squat about what you're doing.

Ball pythons are NOT a temperate climate species they do not Brumate. Nighttime temp drops for cooling yes, Brumation NO. If you look at the area they come from at can get down fairly cold at night ie; into the high 40s but they are in burrows in the ground with a warmer ambient temp. typically mid 60 is the coolest anyone recommends.

toshamc Dec 09, 2005 07:30 PM

I may be wrong - but from what I understand the main areas that BP's come from Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon are all fairly near the equator and don't have drastic temperatures - I believe their average temps range from 70*-90* - again I could be wrong - I suppose that they could also be found farther north in cooler climates as well.

The night time drops can be fairly drastic, much more so than most people realize.

horned_frog_guy Dec 09, 2005 06:40 PM

You go stand outside for 1 hour in your underwear when its 40F, and tell me if you are cold. Why do you have a BP if you know NOTHING about how to care for it? Even with a heatpad, you are not going to get proper temps in your basement during winter. Give the BP to someone who can properly care for it. I still cant believe this post.

HOW ELSE DOES A PERSON LEARN BUT TO ASK, SORRY YOU ANSWERED!

boobubba Dec 09, 2005 07:11 PM

yes asking is how you learn, no problem there. but i think you should walk before you run. how much do you really know about breeding? you should, at least in my opinion, learn more about husbandry and hold off a while before you start breeding. how are they being housed? what are you keeping your temps at in the animals enclosure? are your animals of proper breeding size? how do you plan to incubate the eggs? do you have adequate housing for your new hatchlings? do you have a reliable supply of rodents? can you afford it?

BallPython13 Dec 09, 2005 11:33 PM

Each adult ball python is in a 44 qt long cage. each cage has a heating pad underneath it. It stays about around 85'F on the warm side and the cool side is about 77'F. Yes my male is almost 4 years old and is 850grams and the female is a wc and is
1,400 grams.I built my own incubator the incubator stays between
86'F-88'F.I have a Shoe box for each baby with water bowls and with hide spots and with heating pads, I'll put wet paper towls for substrate for the babies for about a week then put newspaper down. I do have a very reliable supply of rodents. Yes I can afford it. Thanks Scott

nita Dec 10, 2005 11:31 AM

Your hot spot should be 90F and your cool side should be 80F even in cooling season you need those day temps. Ball eggs should be incubated at 88-90F as well so your incubator will need to be hotter. Do yourself a favor and pick up the dvd breeding ball pythons.

do you have a site for that dvd? or a full name and title( ie author as well)

BelgianBeer Dec 09, 2005 07:32 PM

Actually reading is a very good way to learn. I read everything I can find before I purchase anything. I have purchased the full set of temperature books from Royal society and can look up info on any area in the world to Tailor an animals care to its needs.

ecoguard_79 Dec 09, 2005 07:32 PM

hi ill b nice and not jump down your throat for almost killing your bps due to lack of knowlege
what i will do however is recomend you google ball python, care and husbandry. and look for a site that is reliable and has a care sheet and mensure your bps have the mionimum of care requied.
as for breeding, i must agree with others on this one, please hold off a year, get all of the equipmet set up, then try it.
if you are of good financial needs, then go tonight to lll reptile or anoterh site an order a hovabator incubator and go to your garden supply and gett some vermuiculite.
my gf and i are experienced reptile keepers, and we still lost 30 % of our gecko eggs in our first year of trying to breed herps.
we are attempting our first season of bps this year, and we upgraded all of our equipment to accomodate the larger breed
know what you are getting into before you try to breed bps, it would be a shame to hear another person come on here asking for help after half of his bp eggs went bad.

bbb1996 Dec 10, 2005 01:15 AM

You ask that question, and then you say you are going to breed them.........Please do not breed them, you're not ready.

Jaykis Dec 12, 2005 05:05 PM

You need to read about the animals BEFORE you get them. Read as much as you can, THEN get the animals. As far as I know, BPs are not found on Mt. Kilimanjaro. sp?
