Beardie doesn't want to eat his veggies....

renland Dec 09, 2005 06:05 PM

I adopted Ozzie last week from a woman who was moving cross county, and she had only been feeding him baby spinach because "that's the only thing he would eat." I know that spinach is not good for them, and I have been trying to get him to eat other greens, but so far not much progress. I leave a salad for him in his tank during the day, but I don't thank that he touches it. I also try hand-feeding the greens, but he wont go for that either. (I did hand feed him some grapes and a little lettuce earlier in the week). I want him to get the best nutrition possible....how can I get him to start eating more greens?

Being in a new home will often stop dragons from eating greens. I will still offer a large variety of greens, add superworms or silkworms into the salad. Superworms are nice in they will immediately burrow underneath the greens and this added movement often will cause dragons to, at the very least, dig through their greens to get the worms. The trick is to get the dragon to accidently eat some of the greens and hopefully he will find he likes the taste of them and eat the greens willingly.

The secret to doing this is to cut the greens very fine, as y ou would for a baby bearded dragon and mist the greens slightly so they are a bit damp. This way the greens will tend to stick to the worms (they seem to stick better to silkworms than supers). So if the dragon just grabs the worms, he is likely to get a few fragments of greens. Try this for a few weeks and see how it goes. If he is still very finiky about his greens, add a few leaves of baby spinach in withthe mix, still chop them all finely. He may go for the spinach but with such fine pieces he will still eat other kinds.
